Do you know that all dogs in the caribean are considered rabid...that if you are bitten by one, you should be treated as if the dog was rabid

This is certainly not true about all Carribean dogs and a very vague and general statement. The majority of dogs on in belize (which is actually Central America) on Ambergris Caye which are owned by someone have shots, etc...

It doesn't matter where you are, if you are bitten by a dog (or cat) and you can't find the owner, or if the owner doesn't have proof of the animal being vaccinated, you should get treated. Here in the states, the animal can either be quarantined or euthanized and tested, but in Central America, I doubt that's possible. There are so many stray dogs in many parts of Central America that what the previous poster said is at least partially true.

Treatment consists of five injections, over four weeks time. As well as injecting the area around the wound itself with rabies immune globulin.

Most of the rabies shots that I give in the clinic where I work here in Iowa are for ? exposure to bats. When a bat is found in a room with a small child and the bat can't be captured, the child is treated. Probably overkill, but as a parent you can hardly take the chance. Jean

I'm also curious about the local critters ( fire ants , snakes, crocs etc...).I understand you need to use common sense but what are the chances of hiking around off the beaton track & encountering some of the afomentioned...by the way new Lab pup & of course loves to play in the water & mess around in the bush, therfore putting himself possibly in harms way.....

IMHO it is too inconsiderate to take your dogs with you to Belize for a short stay. (If you are living there for months, then ok) but a week or two is too stressful for your pet.

Find a sitter or a good place to board your pets, then pets and owners can have a good vacation.

Chloe -- thats cool , we have no intention of bringing our boy this trip, & he will be in very competent & loving hands while we're there. Although I do appreciate your concern. But the reason I inquired was the topic was being addressed & Bubba's 6 1/2 months old & my wife & I are planning on semi - retiring ( hopefully AC)in a couple of years. Well, Bubba's part of the family now & he would be coming with for extended stays. But back to my original ????? about the critters on the island or mainland, the reason I ask is because I did spend a few years after college living in Fla. Being an outdoor enthusiast & living in the'glades for awhile I have a little idea of the hazards that await a curious pup in the tropics. What I don't know is if AC, this being our 1st trip, has similar hazards due to it being an island.By the way, Bubba also thanks you for your concern.....

Yes the hazards are on AC, that is why I posted the above. Being a dog lover, having owned many, I know I must keep my dog safe, he loves everything.

Back in the day, and not well informed, we took two dogs on a houseboat down the Mississippi, thinking islands would be good stops. Debri, fish bones, glass, rotting food, wild life, not good eats for dogs. Dogs swam so much and getting up on the houseboat, their hind quarters got sore, and all our beds were wet from the dogs the whole trip. Trip was cut short, the dogs could not take it anymore.
