hello kitty Offline
i'm going to be on AC the last two weeks in march and am planning a short trip to the mainland, staying over night in placencia.
first day: fly to mainland and see mayan ruins and manatees
second day: dive from placencia with hamanasi (hopefully to see a whale shark), then fly back to AC
-any suggestions/recomendations for transportation?
-does this itinerary seem reasonable/doable?

Ms. Kitty, this is certainly doable, but with two weeks, why press yourself?

I've done the ruins and, while I am glad I did it, wouldn't do it again. JMHO, and again, I'm glad I did it. Manatee's are cool and any operator that stresses the need to preserve these magical creatures is worth patronizing and there are some good ones with good trips.

Now, as to Placencia, I'd highly recommend that you give yourself a couple of days there, especially if stalking Whale Sharks. We spent a week or so in the southern part of Belize and loved it. I have not done the Whale Shark thing, but believe me its on my immediate list of things to do. If I can get up close and personal with one of natures most magical creatures, I can die happy. That said, they aren't always found on a given trip, so why not spend an extra day and double your chances. There are great places to stay and great people to meet.

My $.02.

Hamanasi is in Hopkins, not Placencia. Contact
seahorse@btl.net, scuba@turtleinn.com and info@robertsgrove.com for whale shark dive and snorkel info. Short trip? fly there and back.

We did a manatee watching trip a few years ago, and it was fun but the manatees were not the high point. We poled in close to the mangroves, sat for 5 minutes, saw one come up take a breath (visible for 5 seconds, have your camera ready) and then go back down. 5 minutes later it happened again. Repeat 3 or 4 times. The water was a bit murky so they appear and disappear pretty quickly. The lunch and snorkeling stops were the high point of the trip.
Been there, done that, the washing machine ate the T-shirt
