The Government of Belize and the Forest Department, have signed a
Co-management agreement with 'Friends of Swallow Caye (Association)' for
the management of Swallow Caye Wildlife Sanctuary in Caye Caulker.

After working with 'Friends of Swallow Caye' for the past four years,
the Forest Department has recommended co-management of the Wildlife
Sanctuary resulting in the signing of this agreement for a five-year
period. The Government, Forest Department and the Association shall
continue to jointly manage and develop Swallow Caye Wildlife Sanctuary
under the provisions of the National Park System Act. Together, the
parties shall formulate and implement detailed management plans for the
proper development of the area. The Government along with the Forest
Department will be responsible for the provision of security,
enforcement of regulations and assisting with the infrastructure,
amongst other functions, whilst the Association will be responsible for
the day-to-day management and presence, collection of entrance, camping,
program and concessions fees and other tasks.

Signing for and on behalf of the Government was Deputy Prime Minister
and Minister of Natural Resources, the Environment and Industry - Hon.
John Briceño, for the Forest Department was the Chief Forest Officer -
Mr. Oswaldo Sabido and for 'Friends of Swallow Caye' were Mr. Lionel
Heredia and Ms. Maria Vega, President and Secretary respectively.
