Over the past couple of days, an assessment team from the Ministry of Education, comprising the Chief Education Officer, the Deputy Chief Education Officer, the Senior Civil Works Supervisor, and the District Education Managers for the Corozal and Orange Walk Districts, have been conducting a thorough inspection of schools throughout Northern Belize in the wake of Hurricane Dean.

Based on the findings of the assessment team, the Ministry wishes to inform Boards of Management of Secondary Schools in the Corozal District, as well as the public, that secondary schools are NOT required to resume classes for the new school year on Monday, August 27, 2007. This is to allow time for urgent and immediate repairs to be done to school buildings affected by Hurricane Dean and to afford principals, teachers, students and their families time to address their own recovery needs.

Boards of Management of Secondary Schools are advised that secondary schools in the Corozal District are to resume classes on Monday, September 3, 2007.

Secondary schools in the Orange Walk District can resume classes as originally scheduled.

The Ministry also takes this opportunity to remind students and families affected by Hurricane Dean that education assistance is available to them. Families affected and in need of education support are asked to report their needs to their DISTRICT EDUCATION CENTER. The Center Managers will then compile a list, in consultation with NEMO, for approval by the Ministry. All assistance will be directed through the students' respective school.
