On Monday we celebrated the commencement of road works on Nim Li Punit St. Another major operation is the Belmopan Bus terminal upgrade. The works are proceeding on schedule but the displacement is palpable as parking is now at a premium in the Market Square. All taxi operators have been re-located to the general parking area and assigned exclusive portions of what was an already congested parking lot. With one traffic officer working the exclusive zone it is difficult to effectively coordinate the daily traffic flow. Drivers are re-directed to park elsewhere but with more vehicles than parking spaces it presents an immediate challenge.City Administrator, Ismael Garcia, explained that the re-assignment of taxi parking spots is an pressing issue.

Belmopan City Administrator, ISMAEL GARCIA:
Last week we had an abriviated meeting becuae the rain really came down so hard on the roof you could not hear in the Civic Cemter, but we met with the taxi drivers and we talked a little about the project and about the closure of the Secal park which is the eastern part of the Belmopan Bus Terminal, so that the much needed works could continue. Now obviously the area that they are now working on in the bus terminal area is the area that had the most taxis parked, so naturally that would have caused some displacement of taxi drivers. What we have agreed to is that the taxi drivers is that the taxi drivers were to go across in the parking lot, the old parking lot of the market area, and so they were to go there along the road. And also we started encouraging taximen to start to look for alternative areas in the city where they could ply their trade, as you will know only 21 taxi drivers will be allowed back in that area when the work is completed. So we are not saying to any taxi operator they cannot continue to operate a taxi, but we are simply saying that in that area only 21 taxis will be allowed. That will cause some displacement

He further empathizes with Belmopan residents but gave assurances that parking conditions will improve as works come to an end.

ISMAEL GARCIA:
If you look behind the Belize Bank you will see an area for some more parking. That's right next to the Hybiscus Hotel there's parking there. We'd like to encourage residents who go to Belize City for the day to use that area around the Courthouse, and behind the Belize Bank, to use those areas for pparking. There are other alternatives, as I know everyone wants to park as close as possible to the bus.But that's not possible, it's going to be even less possible when the work is completed. So we want to encourage residents to be a little understanding, and to start to use up other parking areas that are available in Belmopan. As you know the Social Security parking lot by the Civic Center, which is used as the Tuesday & Friday market, is generally open for parking. So we are encouraging people who go to Belize City every morning to try to use those areas for parking when they go off to work, so that we can accomodate not only taxi drivers but people who are just on an in and out basis, who are to patronise the businesses in the market area.

Belize Roadway Construction is the contractor on the job which is expected to be completed by the middle of November. Now back to Nim Li Punit Street. Since digging and shovelling began the contractor has been attempting to find a happy medium between effecting improvement works and allowing access to businesses on the street. It is proving challenging as everyone wants easy access to conduct business on and through the thoroughfare. CA Garcia is asking for residents' cooperation in this regard.

ISMAEL GARCIA:
I also want to tell residents, that if you haven't had a chance to experience it the George Price Boulivard has been rehabilitated right up to the Our Lady of Guadaloupe High School. I think from that part to Nim Li Punit Street we need a little bit of work, and we are going to have to look to that, but it's been rehabilitated. So if you are a resident who lives in Belmopan City and you need to head out to Belize City, if you want to avoid some congestion in the center of Belmopan, it would be advisable if you take the George Price Boulivard, and that will save you quite a bit of fuel, shave quite a few miles off your journey, and it's really a good road to drive on.

Belmopan Bus Terminal Street officially opened

The Belmopan Bus Terminal Street was officially opened this morning. A brief ceremony was held to officially declare the street project open. The area has been an eye sore filled with potholes and a source of much controversy over parking but that has now changed. The project included the resurfacing of the street with hot mix, realignment of street side drains, and establishment of parking areas and pedestrian lanes among others.

Area Representative for Belmoopan, JOHN SALDIVAR
The work that is being done here today is an example of good Government. It is an example of good Governance. This project, I am being told, had a total project value of $278. The entire project allocation for Belmopan is well above 4 million dollars. It is money that is being well spent. And the evidence that we have here before us this morning is that the money is being well spent. It is very important that I emphasize this issue, because if we are to progress as a nation and as a people, we must reward good Government.

The project was implemented by the Project Implementation Unit of the BMDP under the umbrella of the Social Investment Fund. Meanwhile, street works valued at approximately $2.1 Million for Belmopan/Orange Walk and Corozal are currently being completed. Under this package, Nim Li Punit Street, Racoon Street and a portion of Hummingbird Drive will be paved in Belmopan.
