As everyone has probably read, I'm planning a trip to either Cayo and AC or just AC for this July. I was planning on three days in Cayo around the seventh and then on to AC for seven days. The only problem is, I hear it rains a lot in Cayo in the summer. Even worse, I hear it floods a lot. Has anyone ever been to Cayo in July? Is this rain/flood stuff true? I don't want to plan a great time there and then get rained on the whole time. Any help is appreciated.

We were there the first week of August. We arrived during a rainfall(the bus sprung a leak on a couple of people), after that it rained twice during the week we were there. Kept the heat down so we could walk about easily.

Cinca, any flooding? Did any of your plans get rained out?

I don't know that it floods in Cayo any more than in any other sub-tropical area with seasonal rains, and certainly there is usually less rain in Cayo than in southern Belize. Much of Cayo district is rolling hills and in some areas low mountains, and you do not get any flooding there. After heavy rains, as anywhere the rivers may rise and you get some water near the river.

Seasonal rains do usually start in late June or early July, but it varies, especially given recent climatic changes, and I have been in Cayo in the summer when it rained hardly any if at all for several weeks.

Overall I prefer Cayo in the green season, as it's a little cooler, greener and there's not the risk of fires as in the late spring, what locals call the dry season.

There is simply no predicting the exact weather in Belize any more than there is in Birmingham or Boise. It could be rainy for several days, there could be a drought with little rain, or most likely in the summer there will be some rain but plenty of time for outdoor activities.

A week prior to us arriving in Cayo, there had been heavy rainfall in Guatamala that caused San Ignacio to be under 4 feet of water. Half way up the buildings were water marks! Saw some pictures, and was really happy we were not there when it happened. This is not a common occurrence, however.
Because of the rainfall, we didn't get to go horseback riding. Other than that, we had a great time!

I plan on going to Belize again this year July-August for 3 weeks. I think this trip I will be in Belize City, Caye Caulker, Belmopan, Corozal, Cayo, Monkey River, Dangriga, & Punta Gorda. I'll be booking some places closer to when I go, in case I change my mind.
