“On Monday July 23rd demolition works and repairs got underway on the existing Dangriga municipal market. As a result some twenty five vendors have been relocated to a temporary market located east of the existing municipal market on the compound of the old slaughterhouse. The Belize Municipal Development Project proposes to rehabilitate the existing building which is approximately 4,600 sq. ft. in area, as well as to improve the working conditions of the Dangriga town market vendors and provide an extension of approximately 3,300 sq. ft. for additional space for some of the vendors presently occupying the market’s parking lot. Rehabilitation work should have started last month. Paul Francisco is the Human Resource Officer for the Dangriga Town Council, he explains.”

“It is a very interesting and dynamic project, one which according to the construction schedule should have started in June but was delayed to address couple logistics and oversight. First, it was envisioned that while some renovation work is taking place some of the vendors will be operating in the market. This in itself caused some serious concerns since some serious problems could occur and also delay considerably the completion of the project. However, the project which is underway now is providing needing jobs for our Dangriga residence since the mayor is adamant that Dangriga provides the majority of the labor force and for those who are seeking employment on this project are urged to fill application forms at the Dangriga Town Council. Furthermore on the completion of the project, the facility will have the capacity to accommodate a total of twenty two stall owners. Also, the reconstruction of the fish section of the market inclusive of installing stainless steel counters, replacing of roof structure and external works, including new toilet blocks with waste water treatment and system and the completing of all drainage and all solid waste system. This project is being implemented by SIF and the project implementation unit through the Belize Municipal Development Project, the Government of Belize and the World Bank for a total cost of about BZ$1.5 million ”
