FIRST EVER JANKUNU DANCE COMPETITION TO TAKE PLACE IN DANGRIGA

The first ever Jankunu Dance Festival which also marks the opening on the Jankunu season will be launched this evening in Dangriga Town at the Princess Royal Park. The launch is being organized by the Habinahan Wanaragua Steering Committee and contributors include the National Institute of Culture and History, the National Garifuna Council and BTIA. Another highlight of the Jankunu season is the Jankunu Competition scheduled for January second at the Y-Not Island. Committee member Roy Cayetano spoke to Love News.

"What we are trying to do is to encourage the formation of camps as we have had in the past where people who are interested in Wanaragua have an opportunity to learn the various aspects including drumming, singing, dancing the preparation of costumes, the rules that apply when the dance is done."

The winners of the competition will receive fifteen hundred dollars, second place will received one thousand dollars and third prize is five hundred dollars. The Jankunu seasons will run until January sixth 2011.
