Adrian Coye

One place the light won't go out soon is the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital (K.H.M.H.), which has just announced the appointment of a new Director of Medical Services. The person who intends to bring his own electrical spark to the K.H.M.H. is Dr. Adrian Coye, a Cardiothoracic Surgeon specialist. His appointment is effective as of May first. Doctor Coye studied at the University of the West Indies and in the United Kingdom. His work experience includes a post as an Honorary Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeon at the University Hospital of the West Indies, an Associate Lecturer in the Department of Surgery, and Cardiothoracic Surgeon at the National Chest Hospital in Kingston, Jamaica. He is a published author of scientific articles in the West Indian Medical Journal and the European Journal of Cardiothoracic Surgery. Doctor Coye is Belize's first Cardiothoracic Surgeon and according to the K.H.M.H., he returned to Belize with a goal to establish a modern and internationally-respected Cardiothoracic Service, including Open-Heart Surgery that is slated to start at the KHMH in the second half of this year.

Dr. Adrian Coye, Director of Medical Services, KHMH

"Yes it's been official that I am now the Director of Medical Services starting well I think officially mid sometime last week. And this was as a result of an interview process with a panel from the board and everything else like that. I am a cardiothoracic surgeon primarily and I have been back in Belize a year and eight months or a little bit more than that with the sole purpose of establishing cardiac and thoracic services in Belize for all. And this is the reason why I came and my first place of employment has been the K.H.M.H. I have grown to love this institution and I see great potential for what is possible and I have also seen that a lot of excellent work is already being done here. And so it is, there is a great responsibility for us then to chart a way forward where we have to get away from a lot of the negative publicity or change people's perception of what is happening here because a lot of very good things happen every week."

Jose Sanchez

"Was there any difficulty in making the decision knowing that the K.H.M.H. normally got bad press dealing with things like the availability of equipment, medical supplies or even the controversies around the procurement? Did any of that play a role or how would you be affected by that in taking this post?"

Dr. Adrian Coye

"Well this post has a great responsibility and what needs to be done apart from-I mean there are politics and procurement and all those stories and there is probably much more that is inflated in media than what happens. I can't really comment on that part of it. What I see is a truer purpose of this institution; it is here for everyone. And we have a great responsibility to make this place what it should be because anyone can come through those doors. It could be you, me, family; anything and so we have to be prepared. And above politics, above everything, this is our hospital-it is not somebody else place or so. And we should all want to invest in it. We should all want to be part of the process; to change it, to make it what it should be because we are no less important than anyone else in the world. You know being a Belizean we should be proud and we should have institutions that make use proud and Karl Heusner will be like that."

Doctor Coye has been at the forefront of an affordable Cardiac Pacemaker and Defibrillator service, which is backed by the world's leading manufacturer. He has also led the way in ensuring the sustainability of the new Cardiac Catheterization Services, as well as the training of KHMH personnel in conjunction with our international partner in Charlotte, North Carolina, USA.
