I was fortunate enought to have the time to and talk my wife into exploring Corozal town during my trip to Belize last month. What a cool little town. It is quite slow paced and the tourism is years behind AC and other parts of the country, just the way I like it. I've been reading articles (one of them in AARP magazine)for months about the low cost of living in Corozal and they weren't kidding. You can rent a pretty well outfitted apartment or house for $350-$500 a month. What's more are the great restaurants that serve wonderful local and international dishes for under $10, hell, sometimes its under $5. For those of you considering retirement any time soon, check out Corozal. You won't be sorry.

No, it's not finished. Construction had slowed down when I was there a few days ago. There have been some changes in the bar/restaurant that locals were complaining about -- it's now no-smoking, beer prices have been increased, etc.

Other changes: Cactus is now only open weekends, a new second floor is under construction; it's now more a club than a restaurant. Cafe Kela for the time being is open only with advance reservations. Patty's is very cheap and pretty good. Tony's restaurant is still good.

Hok'ol K'in and Hotel Maya are for sale, as is Tony's. I stayed at Corozal Bay Inn and Copa Banana, both very nice.

I saw it from the outside. It's a ridiculous concept. Only a fool would stay there. In fact, I don't know if they've ever actually had a guest.

I met a friend of the owner on the plane down the last trip. He was picking my brain about tourism, hotels, prices, etc. He asked how much would someone pay to stay at a nice B&B in Corozol. I said about $50-60/nt. So imagine my surprise whan I saw the website and it was so expensive!
