Tonight there are reports that several Guatemalans have been injured and there is a fatality following crossfire inside the Chiquibul National Park. While the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade says that they have reports of several incidents in the national park and that one Guatemalan national may have been killed, it also expresses regret and sympathies to the families of those affected. The incident happened on January twenty-eighth between the B.D.F., Police, Forest and Immigration Officers and Guatemalan nationals. While the details are yet to be established, the Police Department will be leading the investigation and the OAS office in the Adjacency Zone will assist. For close to a decade the media has been reporting that the Chiquibul National Park has come under systematic attacks, primarily from Guatemalans. Over the years, patrol units have documented the impact on the timber, xate, and wildlife. These incursions have grown to the formation of illegal squatting inside Belize. In recent years, the security forces were beefed up and regular joint forces operations were put into effect, but it is difficult to monitor the long stretch of border.
