On Saturday morning September 10th, hundreds of residents, school students and fans gathered at the Central Park to witness the coronation of Miss San Pedro 2011-2012. The six beautiful ladies gathered on the stage as reigning Miss Natasha Stewart passed on the sash, scepter and crown on to Miss Yakarelis Hernandez, San Pedro's newest beauty ambassador.

Yakarelis Hernandez was officially crowned San Pedro 2011, school children came out to parade, there were sack races, lime and spoon races and the Greasy Pole competition was in full swing on Saturday, September 10, 2011. San Pedro came out to celebrate for the weekend during the St. George's Caye Day weekend celebrations.

Outgoing Miss San Pedro 2010, Natasha Stuart handed over the crown, band, cape and scepter to our new Miss San Pedro Yakarelis Hernandez in a brief ceremony that took place at Central Park at midday. Yakarelis was joined on stage by the other four Miss San Pedro contestants, Mayor Elsa Paz and Town Councilors. They then led the parade around town which was comprised of students from Isla Bonita Elementary School, St. Peter's Elementary & High School and San Pedro High School.

Tenth...

This may be Belize's 30th Anniversary of Independence, but the Tenth of September is in its 213th year - and while the citizen's parade may not draw the multitude it once did, and the theme songs may sound a little dated - the tenth is still cause for a celebration and going on bad in the streets.

But before the jump up - there's the nod to officialdom - which we caught at the Memorial park on Saturday morning.

Mayor Zenaida Moya
"As while we commemorate and celebrate a nationalistic and carnivalesque style - this 213th Anniversary. Since that historic day when our forefathers sent the oppressors packing from St. George's Caye, we are reminded that all of us must be united for peace. So we can truly celebrate. We have not lost Belize my fellow Belizeans. We have not lost Belize, for today we can still walk freely on our streets and unlike so many other countries our Governor General and our Prime Minister can still go to their neighborhood grocery story to do their shopping."

Former Queen of the Bay
"With this crown I crown you Queen of the Bay. With this scepter I bid you rule over the Bay."

Amanda Taylor - Queen of the Bay
"I Amanda Elizabeth Taylor receive this crown, this robe and this scepter and will wear it with pride and honor."

Because we keep track of such things, we'll note that this year's tenth jump up was - as last year's - well-spirited but underwhelming.
