I have tons of allergies and am allergic to Deet -
I'm spending one week at St. Ignacio and doing the ruins - does anyone have any recommendations for something to use to keep from being turned into one big bite? :rolleyes:

try starting to take vitamin b-1 a couple weeks before you go. i have heard that the skeeters are turned off by what it does to your body chemistry. also avons skin so soft products work but not near as well as deet. in any case you will smell good and have soft skin. living on the texas gulf coast i have tried everything. i would ask the locals. they have a remedy for everything and there is a tree bark that they use.

You may be surprised at how few mosquitoes there are around San Ignacio. The limestone ground there doesn't allow water to pool much, so there aren't many breeding areas for the mozzies. Some of the jungle lodges don't even have screens on their windows.

The mosquitos situation is not as bad as Minnesota, or Lousiana bayou country as many parts of Belize. The DEET is the way to go. it is what goes on your skin, not what type of vitamins or garlic you digest. This summer there were many articles about West Bank Nile Virus in the states. Keeping mosquitos away from you and your family became more important then just getting itchy, it became a medical prevention. Most of the researchers claimed that : Avon's lotion, B1, B12, garlic pills and lemon juice did nothing. DEET is what works, not fads. have a really great trip down there.

I have had good luck with "jungle Juice" but it's 95% Deet. In the past I have had good luck also with taking vitamin B1 and garlic tablets as mosquitos and sand flies love me. Recently while in Belize it was recommended to me by a local to use something like Baby Oil because they can't get through or don't like the oil. Good luck.

"OFF" works great, but be sure to use the green version (deep woods) as the orange stuff does not work against no-seeums. You can get it in lotion form as well as spray and the lotion is fairly mild on the skin.
They also have a combined mosquito repellant and sunscreen "OFF" but again, make sure you get the green tube (its not as common as the orange, and the orange offers less protection.
I would not want to use something that was 95% deet on my skin. You don't need more than 25-35% deet to get the protection you need.

The 95% merely indicates that it will be effective longer than 35% DEET.

Hi everyone;
I have a question confused We have checked here, in the great white north,
and can't seem to find a repellant that contains deet.
We get as many mosquitos, black flies, no-seeums and deer flies as
anywhere in the world. Could you supply us with a couple of brands
that contain deet? confused
Thanks;
Dan'l O.

Our friends in SP have told us that they found a formula of the Deep Woods brand at Walmart that was extra duty strength. (No, the Walmart was NOT in San Pedro). It apparently worked well enough for the misses, who lives in SP and is VERY attractive to the SP buggies.

Deep Woods Off in the small bottle pump spray with the green cap. You should be able to buy it at Canadian Tire (unless they've moved it off the shelf due to offseason), London Drugs, Walmart and Zellers.
