This is probably a dumb idea, but hubby and I thought it would be a great trip to drive across the country, then down Pan American HWY into Belize. We will have the time to do it, but wonder if it's worth the time? Also, we'll have our dogs with us, and will likely buy a used RV or conversion van to do the trip. Any ideas - pros/cons?

I noticed that you were from Virginia. Personally, I think it would be an unbearable road trip, especially with a few dogs. I don't know how much time you have but I am thinking in terms of weeks and not days for such a trip.

Way too much time on the road as opposed to laying out looking at the Caribbean and getting a nice tan. eek

S&S, you might want check www.belizeforums.com and do a search. Lots of current and past discussion, including a recent jolt to road travelers going into Belize that requires a substantial cash bond to be posted on the vehicle if you plan to stay for more than 30 days. It's an effort that requires lots of digging into crossing two foreign borders to get to Belize.

Thanks for the input. We figure it would likely take four weeks plus to make the trip. I've traveled throughout the US, but my husband has seen very little of it. Thought it would be a fun way to see some of the states, before we end up in Belize. I am concerned about crossing borders, and expenses/duties on the vehicle. IF we did do the trip, we would stay in Belize, and ship our house stuff via freight. Not returning to VA except for visits. Anyhow, you've give us more to think about. Thanks... confused

Last year I flew from California to Brownsville, Texas, got a ride across the boarder and took and express bus to Chetamal. That was a two-day trip. I thoroughly enjoyed it and I don't speak a word of Spanish. The bus was frequently stopped and they come through searching people. I don't know how you would handle that driving.
I like adventure and trying new things. It sounds to me like you do too. Have you considered finding a Belizean who would make the trip with you? Or at someone who spoke Spanish to help you through Mexico?
I sold my home in California, had the movers pack and ship everything. Mine had to go through the Panama Canal but come in about 6 weeks in good condition. That is another topic and if you want more information I would be happy to share.

ScubaLdy - approximately how much did it cost you to take the bus?
I've done the road trip, we were pulling a boat, and yes, it was UNBEARABLE. I would never do it again. Life it too short.

Scubldy, you are right, I LOVE adventure. We have considered hiring someone to go with us, or maybe get in with one of those RV groups who travel the PanAmerican highway. It still sounds like an experience that would stick with me. I'd love to hear what you can tell me about sending your belongings. I don't have too much stuff, but I'm not sure of what it takes to ship it. Shall we start another post, or would you rather PM me?
