Here are a few things I priced out for the fun of it for early to mid September.

From.........via Cancun..............via ...
JFK..........635.14 (jetblue/maya)...657.00 (AA via MIA)
Cincinnati...543.14 (USA3000/maya)...733.00 (Delta via ATL)
St. Louis....543.14 (USA3000/maya)...657.00 (AA via DFW)
LA...........604.00 (Delta/maya).....495.00 (AA via MIA)
Detroit......629.00 (USAir/maya).....680.00 (Cont via IAH)

So, just a few examples, but in most cases, there is a cost savings in connecting via Cancun vs MIA/ATL/DFW/IAH.

The biggest cost savings appear to be where you have a direct flight from your departure airport to Cancun, which is much more likely than having one that goes direct to Belize.

Spirit Airlines is running specials from Detroit to Cancun. I just flew into Cancun from Detroit for $137 one way, including one suitcase.

Spirit Airlines was more expensive than USAir for the dates I was checking, by about 80 bucks.

You have to be flexible with your dates to get the deals, and booking last minute usually works for me. I have started another thread on this subject.

The point of this post was that even with what appears to be an outrageous price for the maya flight, when totaled with the low cost cancun flights, the trip is going to generally be cheaper flying through cancun on maya.

Almost certainly you are correct that you can find last minute deals on the discount carriers to Cancun while you will almost never find them into BZE.

I would really be interested in having Maya link up with one of those airlines to provide one price travel into BZE via Cancun with simple one-stop booking. That would be cool.

Maybe you should email their marketing department and suggest that. I doubt they read this board.

A couple of reports on another board say that Maya has canceled its Cancun and Guatemala flights today, at the last minute, citing the "situation in Honduras."

That would be seriously disappointing.

More like lack of passengers I am guessing. The inaugural flights flew in from both countries so why not to them?

We once spent a year and a cool million and it rained so hard nobody came to the Grand Opening. It wasn't like we could just *cancel the flight, the caterers and orchestra still had to be paid. We didn't have a contingency plan to fly or not and it still paid off...eventually. Maya has bitten off a big chunk, and I'd like nothing more than to see them come out well.
