ACES/American Crocodile Education Sanctuary is a non-profit organization, permitted by the Belize Forest Department, dedicated to the conservation of Belize's protected species, specifically American crocodiles, Crocodylus acutus, through scientific research and education in order to preserve Belize's wildlife for future generations.

Recently the Belize Forest Department discovered a facility with over 20 inhumanely kept freshwater Morelet's crocodiles. They are in putrid water contaminated with feces and have no fresh water source for drinking. At least one is apparently starving to death and may have to be euthanized. In addition, there is not ample shade to prevent them from overheating.

With funding ACES can build, in one week, a natural containment facility for the crocs at ACES Educational Croc Eco-Sanctuary located at Caribbean Shrimp Farms, LTD, in Ladyville, Belize. The crocodiles will receive medical attention and be rehabilitated. Smaller crocs, once healthy, will then be tagged and re-released in appropriate areas to be determined by the Belize Forest Department. Crocs over 6 feet in length that have been fed by humans cannot be re-released because they now associated humans with food and are dangerous. ACES will care for those animals for the rest of their lives at the sanctuary.

This proposal is based on two 65' x 65' x 8' deep natural habitat facilities for approximately 20 crocodilians 10 feet and under. With this land and water ratio, the secure, natural crocodile habitats could house 240 feet of crocodilian (i.e. 20 crocs that were 12 feet in length). A freshwater well is an absolute necessity for the healthy maintenance of freshwater species, Morelet's crocodiles, and will allow the facility to easily expand to house more Morelet's if needed.

Please help ACES save these crocodiles and build a natural habitat for them at the new sanctuary where they can be cared for, treated, rehabilitated and re-released when able, or live safely in peace. We estimate the cost to be approximately $12,700 US to build, rescue, and relocate and all the crocs to ACES new facility. The proposal budget and timeline is available upon request.
