Over the years, the town of San
Pedro on Ambergris Caye has
grown from a sleepy fishing
village to a bustling tourism hub,
and this weekend it became proud
owner of the nation's newest
marine docking facility. At
ceremonies held on Friday
morning, residents of the island joined Prime Minister
Said Musa and Minister of Works Vildo Marin in
inaugurating the San Pedro Commercial Marina. The
concrete installation, located at the southwest end of
the island, was built at a cost of three point five
million dollars, with funding provided by the
Government of Belize. Town Councillor Mel Spain told
News 5 that the marina project, which is phase one of
the San Pedro Pier Development, included reclamation
of twenty-one acres of swampland, dredging of a mile
long channel leading into the wharf, and the
installation of lighting to allow for twenty-four-hour
usage. Initial work on the project started in July 2001.

Contractor was Johnston International.

Shallow depths and treacherous reefs will hopefully keep the cruise ships docked in Belize City. Of course dozens will attack la isla bonita via turbo boats. We will have to use the off beaten trails........ms

The latest news is that the barges will not be using this marina - for now - as the dredging has been done all wrong; the approach angle for the ships has to be changed; they are working on that now.

It is so comforting to know we can count on the tourists and expat community to continually badmouth every new project initiated by the Belizians. Surely the local government and cummunity have no idea what they want or what might be in their best interests. Only the boarders can see the future clearly.

Congrats on the completion of such a major project. Having the barges dock on the backside will improve the view in town, reduce the traffic of trucks moving goods and also save residents south of town from listening the the barge go by late at night - it is very noisy! I am sure everyone involved in this project has worked hard and deserves some respect for a job well done.

Congratulations. Progress at times has an impact on resources that not everyone likes to see, but is necessary -- even in the States. Many folks are concerned about the huge impact that cruise ships are having on the Belize environment. If one shares world consciousness, it is "our" environment. I think that is what triggered the responses that you read, KB.
