Hi, My hubby and I are coming to San Pedro in April and we don't have any snorkling gear. Should we buy and bring our own or can you rent it reasonably there?

Thanks

You can rent it there, but I'd buy my own mask & snorkle. Get a better fit (and ya never know where that snorkel has been).

Rent the fins.

or...check the net for the neat little US Divers travel snorkel set i got for around $50. it has a great silicone mask, excellent "dry" snorkel and a pair of "short" split fins which are quite good enough for most snorkeling you'll do. this set comes in its own small backpack with extra pockets. it's a terrific deal...got it on ebay more than a year ago...

trust me...as a first timer last year...you'll be hooked and glad you invested in your own gear! this little set can fit very easily into your luggage and is lightweight to haul around.

I THINK THAT I JUST SAW THAT SAME SET AT COSTCO, ABOUT $40... NOW I WISH I WOULD HAVE BOUGHT A SET FOR MY DAUGHTER....

Thanks for the info.......We are arriving on April 16th and are staying at Banana Beach. One of the reasons we decided to go to San Pedro is because of this message board. It sounds amazing. I'm sure we will have the trip of a lifetime!

Dry snorkels are definitely the goods. For those who don't know, they have a one-way trap. When a roll comes over your snorkel or you go down, it shuts instantly, preventing water from entering the tube, so you rarely have to purge much when you surface. It's more of a convenience feature if you know how to purge, but it really helps those that are new to it.

I ran into a lady trying to teach her very young daughter how to snorkel in St. John last year. I was returning and saw them struggling with the water she kept inhaling because she couldn't purge her rental snorkel well. They were staying at my resort, so I swapped the mouthpiece with my spare and gave them the snorkel for the day and they couldn't thank me enough.
