Have snorkeled around many Carribean Islands over the years. Prefer to abandon snorkel, mask, fins and just use swimmers goggles and rubber rafts . . . I know it sounds silly, but it's very simple and comfortable (no need to lug my bulky gear around any longer, no uncomfortable masks, mouthpieces, etc.) Without taking a boat ride to the barrier reef, is there good beach snorkeling on the southern part of AC?

By all means heed the above post. It is really just too dangerous to do it. There have been accidents and it is just not worth the risk. Boat traffic has increased over the years and in high season much worse. I sometimes sit on the veranda and cringe watching the jet skis in particular, they are tourists having a good time, but don't always respect the boat lanes. Have seen some close encounters with snorklers.

Are there any good snorkeling opportunities near shore around the Caye . . . not just around the barrier reef?

Under the piers usually has good snorkeling. Ramon's especially. Have seen seahorses, etc.

Well neeto BUGMAN - your new way to snorkel sounds right up my alley! I hate lugging all that stuff - it seems to get in the way in and out of the water AND I've never had a mask that didn't leak. Do you use the snorkel?

Please, don't swim to the reef - 1. It is far unless you were in the olympics and 2. A boat will get ya. The boat rides aren't that bad, only bad part is $$$$ outlay.

Have fun@!!!

Malibu, thanks for the advice. I've abandoned the snorkel as well. I own good equipment - about $250 outfit, but over time it becomes uncormfortable and it's a load. My wife and I are strong swimmers . . . we just swim on $2 Walmart inflatable rafts with high quality swimmer's goggles. If I want to go deep, I leave my raft with my wife and surface dive. By the way, about boats back and forth to the reef, can we rent a boat for a week? If not, can we have a boat pick us up at our dock, 3 miles below San Pedro? Thanks.

On the subject of jet skis, I have seen a young man several times recently running a high-powered machine at speed all the way into the beach, on both sides of the Yacht Club dock. Dangerous and (I believe) illegal. I recognise him as the son of a prominant local.

Can't beat Ramons with it's stairs. Stay away from docks that have boat traffic like Hustlers. Way up north the reef gets close and traffic is less, like north of mexico rocks. Really depends on your skill/endurance level.

Ramons is a no-brainer. Jeff:)

Bugman, I asked the same question, got the same response.....the answer is no, do a search on boat rentals...you can't rent a boat, at least not one with an engine. You can rent a canoe, you can rent a kayak, but you can't rent a powerboat. First they will tell you it's a liability. Then they'll tell you you can't handle a boat in these "unfamiliar" waters. Takes local knowledge ya know :-) Too dangerous. Then they'll tell you they can't make any money renting boats, you'll wreck them, and then they'll tell you the truth. The locals need a job and running boats is the only job they know how to do. Just hire them, they work for a reasonable wage. They do a good job, go to good spots, they'll even let you drive, but they ain't renting a boat.
