We have traveled a lot to the Riveria Maya/ Akumal area where there is decent beach snorkeling and we want to try Belize. Are there any resorts where you can snorkel from shore and see some fish and reef? I have a hard time in boats.....but can do then if it is a small group or a private charter. We like to snorkel as much as possible since we do some high def underwater video taping as a hobby. In kumal we would go 4-5 times a day so we could see a variety of sea life.

Also any feedback on the following resorts:
Belizian Shore Resort
Royal Caribbean Resort
Coconuts Caribbean Hotel
Mata Rocks Resort

Thanks in advance for any info.

Its different here,we have technically 'Inner Lagoon Shore' the reef is in frount of the island to far out to practically swim to it and what is in-between the shore and reef flat is shallow turtle grass beds.
But this also makes for a mellow boat trip to the reef (not in the open ocean).
Count on your snorkeling trips being by boat or kayak to the reef.
Almost all operators on the island have a snorkel trip and some times twice a day that cost between 30. to 40 usd.
Your list of Hotels is fine there all legitimate , nice places to stay on the island.

i would be remiss if i didn't mention Hol Chan Marine Reserve.
about a 15 min. boat ride from town and in the 30 to 40 usd range for a half day snorkel trip. 30 or more operators send a 9am boat there daily.
10 usd park fee.

Thanks for the quick response.
How long do the boats stay out?
Do you have to follow a guide? We have snorkeled a lot but would rather be on our own.

Are there any all inclusive resorts on Ambergis Caye?

Do we need to change our US dollars?

You can snorkel for free at numerous docks along San Pedro, but to get the amazing Hol Chan Marine Reserve or to see the very best of the reef, you will need to go by boat or kayak as Elbert mentioned. You will be with a guide.

Thankfully we don't have all inclusive resorts in San Pedro, so you'll be able to enjoy everything that San Pedro has to offer.

US dollars are accepted everywhere.

The 9am boat trips return at aprox. 12:00
and the 2:00 returns about 5:00.
Its a schedule most of the island is on.

As everyone is advising, don't miss Ho Chan and Shark & Sting Ray Alley. It's a very short boat ride and your guide will be in the water with you.
As collky says you can snorkel off many docks any time. I've done it many times and the best by far is at the end Ramon's dock. They have established an artifical reef and do not allow fishing. There are 100's of fish under and around the dock of varied species. Of course they are smaller than what you will see at Ho Chan, but still great. I have even see string ray and eel there. There is a ladder to get in and out of the water and boats stay clear, but stay on guard.
Have a great time. It is so wonderfully different than Mexico!! You'll love it!

Tranquility Bay Resort is the only resort on the island where you can snorkel from shore to the reef safely. The reef comes in close to shore and there is little to no boat traffic with a lot of patch coral.... boats have to slow down and watch where they are going.

Cheers,
Carlos

Blue Reef Resort offers an all inclusive plan. Kayak snorkeling is good there.
