From experience:
We have stayed at several places in Belize.
At both Capt. Morgan's Retreat on AC, and at Kitty's Place in Placenica (to the far south), thongs were OK, nobody got excited.
On AC, Journey's End had a sign posted on a palm tree south of the pool area, that it was "clothing optional." But we never saw anyone there.

No legal nude beaches that I've heard of.
I would say the Belizean norm is well covered bathing wear.
If you go to an uninhabited area or out on the water, you could probably do what you want.
I've noticed most tourists show respect for others. However an occasional drunk naked person might show up or a topless tanner on a dock.
Belize it!

True, there are no LEGAL nude beaches. Women do try it at several resorts.....never seen a man try it...shucks!.....LOL....just kidding! My thoughts on the subject are...yes there are a lot of secluded places on the island where one can go and you won't see a soul all day. There are also some small islands that are nothing more than a spit in the water with a few coconut palms that would make a great place for a day of snorkeling and a picnic....and in the buff I guess. There are a lot of European tourist that come here and they have very different ideas and upbringings than either Belizean or North American people. Not that it's wrong...just different. What might be ok and completely normal for one person, might be offensive to another. My only problem with nude sunbathing is that I would like to see this island remain family oriented and not all families will approve. When it comes to kids, parents have very strong feelings about what they want them to see. If nude bathing and sunning were allowed or tolerated, I think eventually you would see an impact of some kind on the islands tourism. It doesn't take long for word to spread.

I agree with Sandshaker. If you are out at a resort, thongs might be acceptable. Hotels in or near San Pedro, I don't think it would be in good taste. Many families with children.
