Hi Folks, I am going to be in Ambergris Caye for the month of July, and I was just wondering if all the beaches were open to public? Or do some resorts own land right up to the water?
Also, where would you say the best place to swim is? e.g... Nice sand - nice water.

These may be stupid questions but I am just hoping that the best beaches aren't owned by hotels.

Thanks for your help

to my knowledge, all beaches are public. most have very nice sand. they tend to be quite shallow and have sea grass, tho some places are nice for swimming. we've swam at the cut.

the rest i'll have to leave to those who are truly in the know.

There is a law in belize called something like "Queens land" or something like that. Don't remember exactly. But it basically states that a certain amount (40 feet or so if my memory is right) of land between privately owned property line and the water must be open for public use and access.

The catch to this is that some property lines extend into the water, so that open public land might also be under water and the beach technically under ownership of the landowner.

Regardless, I've never been chased off of any property I've walked across.

Beach erosion over years passed from the original surveys, makes that a small squeeze through in a few places, but all in all its like the Belizeans say, Beach is owned by God and the Queen rules the sea'.

Ramons and Banyan Bay have nice swimming beaches. Most of the docks are neat places to snorkel under - but beware of boat traffic!
