SPHS Students to perform in a theatrical production in Los Angeles

Debbie and Larry Heimgartner are dear friends of Ambergris Caye as they make annual trips to the island and most popularly known as the "paletas giving people". They have made it a custom that on their visits to the island they give out paletas or popsicles to the children of the primary school. But they have also been involved with the high school, bringing students from the US who perform educational plays for the students to enjoy and be a part off.

On this year's visit to the island Debbie and Larry are here to finalize all the arrangements for two superb students of San Pedro High, Emily Gomez and Ismael Kay, to travel to the US where they will participate in Larry's latest projects, a short play entitled "Our World Pre XVI" and "Our World V". Ismael Kay and Emily Gomez are 3rd form students and are top students in the Academic class; both have proudly represented the school in various competitions such as the Math Olympiad and Food and Nutrition Competition.

In speaking with Larry Heimgarnter, Theater Arts Professor of Los Angeles Harbor College, he explained to us that Ismael and Emily will be participating along with other students from around the world as the project uses performing arts to inform and educate young people on current issues affecting them. To date this project has seen cultural exchanges with students from the United States, England, Zanzibar and now Belize.

Students Ismael Kay and Emilie Gomez, both 15 years old students of the 3A class, along with Vice Principal of the San Pedro High School (SPHS), Mrs. Conchita Flota will be travelling to the United States of America in early June. The team is travelling to participate in a theatrical project in Los Angeles, California at the invitation of Los Angeles Harbor College (LAHC).

The project is scheduled for the dates June 3rd through June 10th and will feature students from around the world. The students will converge at LAHC to work on the theatrical production of "OUR WORLD V" a production which deals with environmental issues being faced by children around the world.

On Tuesday May 10th, The San Pedro Sun met with Larry and Debbie Heimgartner of the Theater Arts Department of LAHC, along with Sandra Osuma, student at LAHC and Katalil Nagy of Budapest Hungary to find out more about the program.

This marks the first year that Belize is participating in the exchange program and will be represented by two of San Pedro's very own. While in Los Angeles, the students will be joined by students from Cornwall and Barclay colleges from England, working on common projects.

Two projects that the students will be working on are two plays in a series called "Our World". The plays are written to be presented to high schools, youth groups, colleges and universities around the world, and deal with social issues facing young people around the world. They will have a total of about six performances throughout the exchange.

While the students will be engrossed in practice and rehearsals and performances, according to Mr. Heimgartner, they will have some down time. He stated that as part of the children's cultural experience and to have some fun, they are scheduled to visit Beverly Hills, Hollywood, Disneyland, Universal Studious, shopping, baseball games involving the Anaheim Angels and the New York Yankees as well as barbeques and breakfasts.

The San Pedro Sun spoke with the team on their return. According to Ismael Kay, "I have to say that this experience is one of my best experiences that I have ever had. It is truly unforgettable. The people we met made us feel at home, they were very loving, very warm. We all connected and acted as a family. I myself learned that one, in your teenage years you should make the best of it; make the right decisions because these are what make you a strong person. I also learned that you should be grateful for everything that you have because you never know when it's going to end and when you're not going to have it anymore so make the most of it when you have it".
