The 4th Annual Travelling Caribbean Film Showcase hosted in Belize

Films from across the region are being featured in a week of screenings as the fourth annual Travelling Caribbean Film Showcase is hosted in Belize. The event started at six o’clock this evening at the Price Center in Belmopan and will continue until November thirtieth. It's an opportunity for the general public to view almost forty films for free and get a glimpse of the realities and challenges of Caribbean immigrants worldwide. While local filmmakers have participated in the showcase in the past, but there are no Belizean entries this year. Still, it promises to be an exciting week of screenings and NICH Communications Officer, Shari Williams, says it has something for everyone.

Shari Williams, Communications Officer, NICH

"This year is the fourth Travelling Caribbean film Showcase in Belize. The film showcase; thirty-nine various films from fifteen different countries have made their stop in Belize. The Coordination Committee, which consists of the Film and Media Arts Unit as well as the Belize National Library and Information System, has this year partnered with the George Price Center to Screen the Films. They’re usually screened in Belize City but this year we decided to take it to the Belmopan audience. So thirty-nine films will be screening in Belmopan for the next week or so."

"Any Belizean films included in that?"

Shari Williams

"Sadly, this year, no. a selection was made in Cuba and there was a panel of members who selected the films that would be included in the travelling showcase. This year, we didn’t have any Belize entries, but definitely There’s a call for the fifth Travelling Showcase so again, we're putting the call out there. any Belizean filmmakers who want to submit films to be a part of the Caribbean Travelling Showcase, please just contact the film and media arts unit at the Bliss."

Delahnie Bain

"Could you give kind of a sum up of what types of films are in there?"

Shari Williams

"The thirty-nine films include feature films, short films, documentaries and also animation so there’s something in there for everybody. We're inviting schools; we know that various schools have booked with the George Price Center to do some private screenings. So we're inviting schools to pre-book but the cost for the general public is free so feel free to check the time and dates, which films you care to look at. Most of the films are two hours-most of the screenings are two hours long so if it's short films, you'll have a combination. This year, the fourth Caribbean Travelling Showcase focuses on the theme Diaspora. It includes films which showcase Caribbean immigrants all over the world. When the showcase leaves Belize, it goes to the other thirty-nine countries as well as it makes a stop at the film festivals in South America and Europe. So this is Belize's opportunity to view some of these films."

Visit the NICH website to view screening schedules and trailers for the films. Entrance to the screenings are free.
