COUVA, Trinidad - Deon McCaulay scored three goals and led Belize to a 5-2 victory over Montserrat on Wednesday in the first qualifying match for the 2014 World Cup.

McCaulay gave Belize the lead in the 24th minute and, after Jay Hodgson equalized a minute before halftime, Harrison Roches restored the advantage in the 50th.

Elroy Kuylen added the insurance in the 53rd and McCaulay tacked on his final pair in the 74th and 82nd.

Hodgson scored a second goal for Montserrat in the 85th.

The match was played in Ato Boldon Stadium in Trinidad with the second leg set for the Belizean capital of Belmopan on Sunday.

The winner between Montserrat, listed 202nd and last in the monthly FIFA World Rankings, and Belize, 172nd, will advance along with Bermuda and the winners of four other preliminary round pairings to the first group stage of CONCACAF qualifying.

The first group stage, set for the fall of the year, will consist of 24 teams divided into six, four-team groups.

Disputed Belize National Selection Wins In Trini

We should all be celebrating tonight; Belizean national selections played in Trinidad and Mexico this afternoon - and both teams won. The male national selection won in football and the boys under 16 won in Basketball.
First to football.

The game against Montserrat was played at four pm at Ato Boldon Stadium in Couva, Trinidad. It was the very first game worldwide of the preliminary competition of the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

Belize dominated and won the game five to two. Deon MaCauley pulled the rare hat trick scoring in the 24th, 74th and 83rd minute, while Harrison Roches scored in the 50th minute, and Elroy Kuylen scored in the fifty-third minute. Lee Hodgson scored twice for Montserrat.

Belize plays Montserrat in the return match on Sunday at the FFB stadium in Belmopan. Belize simply needs to score back here to advance.

It's a good win, but no astonishing feat; we note that Montserrat is ranked 202nd in the world to Belize's 172nd -and the win comes in the midst of controversy. According to the government the FFB - suspended as it is by the Sports Council cannot even field a national selection. Belize also faces imminent suspension by FIFA. So we're not sure that this victory counts for anything, or will amount to anything, but the FFB has reportedly taken out proceedings in court to preserve its status, so the situation is still evolving.

Despite the controversy, we expect the return match to proceed as planned on Sunday in Belmopan.
