San Pedro Lobster Fest 2012 was bigger and better!
On Friday, June 15nd the San Pedro Lobster Fest 2012 started off in grand fashion with opening ceremonies at El Divino Restaurant at Banana Beach Resort. The jam packed party of lobster lovers gathered to celebrate the opening of the long anticipated opening of the lobster season. With DJ music entertaining the crowd outside and the Caribbean sounds of live steel drum music inside, guests enjoyed great food and crustacean camaraderie. The festivities continued with the Grand Lobster Crawl, where lobster enthusiasts could visit participating local restaurants, bars and businesses to have their Lobster Crawl Passport stamped while enjoying daily special events. At the end of week each stamp counted as a ticket to enter a grand raffle to win a vacation package to San Pedro Lobster Fest 2013. This turned into great fun as many made it a point to fill their passport with as many stamps possible.

Guatemalans Prove Gracious in Victory in the Two International Regattas Held in San Pedro
On the last weekend of San Pedro's 2012 Lobster Fest, treachery and abandonment by Aeolus the wind god and Poseidon, god of the sea, failed to stop the historic first international regattas in Belize from sailing to completion. Despite puny and variable and zephyrs that waned to non-existence at times, junior sailing squads from around Belize sailed against Guatemala's superb and amiable ASOVELA contingent, comprised of 13 young skippers, 3 expert professional trainers, and some chaperones. What a day on the Central Park waterfront was had on Saturday! Throughout the day, 21 Optimist sailing dinghies and 6 Laser sloops competed off Central Park in what is called the First Belize/ Guatemala Friendly Regatta. The action of such a large flotilla of sails, gave the crowds something very colorful to watch while awaiting the frantic passage of kayakers in the long-distance endurance contest that was also underway. In truth, so good were the Guatemalan sailors that not a single Belizean skipper was able finish ahead of any one of them. Yet the Guatemalans were also so gracious and friendly with their opponents that the Belizean skippers felt pride and excitement about the experience of competing against them.

Spiny Lobster's Popularity
The spiny lobster season is officially open for the next nine months and naturally San Pedro had a blast at the Seventh Annual Lobster Festival. But did you know that way back in the 1960's, it was the spiny lobster along with our reef, beach and people that attracted some of the first tourists to our Island? To tell the truth we did have some very huge lobsters back in those days. One pound lobster tails were common in those days as fishermen returned with their catch from Glover's Reef and Turneffe and other cayes down southern Belize. Two pound lobster tails were also brought. They were indeed huge and if there was a lobster fest back then, they would probably have to be sold for 100 dollars each.

Well we made up our mind and our reservations. We are staying on Caye Caulker at Caye Caulker Condos. 4 nights there and then to Black Rock. Kids are so excited. This will be my 3rd time (though over 20 some years). Wish the kids were old enough to scuba but they will love snorkeling.
