Beginning to plan a trip next May/June taking the Mexican bus trip to Chetumal from South Texas
at Brownsville.Wondering if is practical to have a cab from Corazol take us, probably as many as 4 guys, to placencia. We will spend a couple days there then have someone sail us to Caye Caulker. We will spend a couple more days there then off to SP.for a week or so. Any and all suggestions/inputs are welcomed here. Some of us have been to those places before but not the Mexico leg of the trip, new inputs are always good.
Thanx........Richard :p

I guess my response is:

If you are going to spend all those long, hard hours on the bus from Brownsville to Corozal, the bus trip from Corozal to Placencia would be a piece of cake. You could get someone to drive you, but it would be expensive.

Also, getting a boat from Placencia to Caulker would be pretty costly.

Guess I don't quite see the economics of it.

Thanks for the thoughts Lan. It's not really an economic issue, we would like to see some Mexican countryside without having to do the driving. We also thought it might be most convenient not to have to return a rental car from Placencia.Expense is no concern on this one.

One option is to have a rental car delivered to you in Corozal Town. Several of the Belize City car rental companies will do it for you, though there is a drop fee. Budget has done this for me a few times -- believe last time the drop fee was US$50. You could then drive to Placencia at your leisure and when you are ready to go to Caulker turn in your car in Belize City and hop the water taxi.

On the other hand you could always fly from Corozal to Placencia and then from Placencia to Caulker.

For that matter you could fly from Cancun to Chetumal. Frankly there is not alot of countryside that you will be seeing on a bus trip along this mexican stretch of road. Most of your view is of a highway lined with scruffy trees that block any distant views.

Ragamuffin Tours on Caye Caulker operates overnight camping sail trips to/from Placencia. You can catch a water taxi or plane from Corozal to Caye Caulker.

Thanx to all for the thoughts. Probably take the bus from Corazol to Placencia. Won't be in any hurry anyway. Just thinking about doing things a little differently this time.

http://www.raggamuffintours.com for info about that Placencia trip.
I applaud you for wanting a different travel experience. For me, its also the journey, not just the destination. I've driven thru and also taken the bus (a lot) in Mexico.
