Leaving at 3 am for the airport ofr NC for 2 weeks. All you North Carolilnians out there - I'm looking for restaurant recs in Charlotte - 2 categories: 1) great wine list 2) great BBQ.

Also any must sees on the road between Charlotte and the Cedar Island ferry? rented a house on Ocracoke for the second week - what's not to be missed?

Hoochie, yo know the only place you will find GREAT BBQ, is in Texas ! That stuff they serve "Up North" in NC, isn't fit for land fill. (I'm gonna catch it now) laugh

You Dog - had me all excited until I read this:

IMAGINARY PLACE PROFILE
North Carolina > All counties > Surry County > Mayberry

Mayberry
Setting for the 1960s TV program, "The Andy Griffith Show"
The Mayberry spirit is rooted in Griffith's hometown, Mount Airy, NC, where you can still get a porkchop sandwich at the Snappy Lunch. The city celebrates Mayberry Days each September

. . . if only we were going in September . . .

lawcucui,

Sorry I couldn't help you with outer banks recommendations when you asked a few months ago (never having been myself), but I can give you a few recommendations on barbecue. Some may be practically on the way, others may be a slight detour:

Shelby (about 45 minutes from Charlotte on I-85): Alton Bridges Barbecue or Red Bridges Barbecue. Two different styles, both good pork barbecue. In addition, Alton Bridges has a good barbecued chicken as well.

Lexington: various barbecue restaurants reputed to be good (right off I-85).

Durham, N.C.: "Old North Carolina Barbecue"--good pork barbecue and a great buffet--well, at least it was when I used to frequent it in college 10 years ago.

Calabash, N.C.: Numerous good restaurants with buffets that have a good balance of seafood and pork barbecue.

Hope this helped.
