The price regime for LPG, Liquid Petroleum Gas is changing again, and consumers will now have a choice: you can either buy cheaper, less efficient propane rich LPG, or buy the more expensive, more efficient, butane rich version. A release from the Bureau of Standards notifies that Belize Gas Limited and Western Gas, which import their LPG from Mexico will sell for 121 dollars per hundred pound cylinder in Belize City with varying prices in other districts. That's the more expensive gas, which has 60% propane to 40% butane. The higher butane content makes the gas more efficient, basically makes it hotter.

The other grade of LPG is being imported by the Central American companies, namely BWEL, Southern Choice Gas, Zeta and Tomza. They import 90 percent propane and 10% butane, which is less efficient, but cheaper. And so, a hundred pound cylinder of that will cost five dollars less. The Bureau of standards says butane is scarcer during winter months when it is used for heating in cold countries.

I understand that butane provides more energy bang for the buck, but the last sentence in the Channel 7 story is a little confusing, since propane can be stored outside in much colder temps than butane, as it continues to convert from a liquid to a gas even at very low temperatures, well below zero F such as may be experienced in cold countries. Cold countries do not use butane in winter.
