Trip Report-Days 3 and 4 - 03/13/04 04:53 AM
2-21-2004 Saturday
Slept in a little this morning, as much as possible in paradise. Got up before my wife, and as I was milling around the room, I spotted the conch that Bicho Jr. had given to my wife. Well as any landlubber knows, you can hear the ocean in a conch shell. Have you seen the Bud Light commercial where the guy is trying to pick up girls? If you have you know where this story is headed.
Just as I pick up the conch to put it to my ear, I spot these really SCARY looking, SPIDERISH, tentacle looking things protruding from the conch. Thank god I didn't get it up to my ear because either I would have been making my own Bud Light commercial or the thing would have been flung through the nearest window. Needless to say, Mr. Conch ended up at the end of Belizean Shores pier.
Later on some of us decided to rent a golf cart for a couple of days (6-seater). Went with Monchos as Castle Carts did not have a gasoline powered 6-seater. Rented it right from the Caye-Mart and it arrived in about 10 minutes.
We all mounted up and headed for town!
We were going along enjoying the ride, dodging chuckholes and anticipating what would be in store for us in San Pedro, when, CLANK! The front leaf spring broke entirely in half! What made it odd was that we were on the smooth part of the road just 100 yards south of the Palapa Bar. We should have made it a point to stop there in the first place as the spring would have given way in the park lot. I mean it would have saved us that 100 yard walk.
Phoned Monchos form the Palapa, and in about an hour we had a replacement cart, electric this time.
On to town we go. We shopped, ate lunch at Fido's, bought a case of Premium from Bowen distributor and got the gas cart back. Back to Belizean Shores to clean up, stopped at Palapa of course. Then on back to town with flashlights. Went to Fido's for Kelly Mcquire and CategoryX. After all as Peter put it, “Being in San Pedro and not going to Fido's on Saturday night is like not diving the Blue Hole”.
Kelly Mcguire was/is a really good solo musician, (see servacat's posts for more detail on him [;-). Category X is a solid rock band as well, and they got us out of our chairs and on the dance floor. Paisano made an appearance and showed us all that we were “number 1” in his heart, I think he must have learned that salute from Peter.
On the way home we stopped at Big Daddy's and some had street food (thin sliced beef burritos-all agreed they were good) I stayed in the cart for both of those events. Home in the dark. Almost easier in the dark as you can pick out the chuckholes better. We sat in the hot tub till about 3:00am. Sorry "bout that.
2-22-2004 Sunday
Slept in a bit. Five of us went in to town for Lunch at BC's to meet some boardies. The cart began to give us fits. It had cut out a little the night before, but it was getting worse. Since Monchos is right by BC's, we left it there and went for lunch.
We meet up with Mikell her husband Alan, Billb, and Frank. It took awhile for the food, but it was awesome. I had the sausage. Went back to Monchos, the cart wasn't done so they loaned us the electric again. Shopped awhile, saw the “zebra-backed” monkey in someone's yard, at least that's what we called it. I sort of chauffeured the gang around letting them pick where to shop, then I would round the block and park. On one of those trips I happened down by the lagoon side. I stopped for a beer at a snack stand by the big pink house, and who do I see coming down the stairs? No other than Bicho Jr. we exchange pleasantries and I ask him where his dad was. Fishing of course.
I go and pick up the gang and as we head back we end up face to face with a wild eyed gang of paint wielding Mardis Gras children. BTW, “The paint wielding Mardis Gras children” would be an excellent name for a rock band. We managed to somehow run the gauntlet and not get painted!
We head back and as we are on the North end of town the cart is STILL cutting out. Back to Monchos we go. “Take it to the repair shop” she said, even before I got my second foot in the door. Of course I knew where it was by then. Picked up the electric again and we headed back to Belizean Shores. The gang mentioned something about a $50.00 refund, but by that point I was not in the mood to hear it. All I was looking for was that bend in the road where the entrance to the Palapa bar is. Made it there for the Sunday jam. Our favorite Category X guitar player was there, as was the young drummer.
Once we were back, we played several games of volleyball and fried the fish we had caught on Friday. ***NOTE*** Be sure ahead of time how many people really want to eat fish before you have your guide fillet them. We had a ton, almost too much. ***END OF NOTE*** I think maybe now I know how Jesus did it.
Two more days of report left….
