from the honorable Mr. Lankford:
//////////////

11pm Mon
Heavy rains reported in the wake of Chantal's passage in San Pedro.

As she's done a time or two today, Chantal is dragging her main
weather behind her center of circulation rather than shoving it in
front of her. here apars to be a special spot right over Ambergris
Caye. There is more rain coming up from the south, and it is all
likely to be dragged over the island. While the center of circulation
loses strength over land, it's also more likely to let go and dump.

There can of course be some pretty frisky local wind associated with
those big old internal systems.

Here's another satellite for us to click on, works the
same as the other one. High zoom shows the situation pretty well.

downtown, 1AM

Rain stopped about 30 minutes ago and some slight drizzling with fairly
strong winds now from the east.

Walked to the beach and slight beach erosion. The tides have increased but
could not see one single pier submerged or showing signs of damage.

There is slight debris (mostly leaves) on the streets and all else seems
pretty much intact.

that white spot is stubborn, won't move inland. grows, shrinks. its kind of fading into the surrounding are right now, but it sure is stuck.

its also putting SPR closer to and into the NE quad it sounds like... where the stronger winds are..
==============
From Joe up north

tides are just a little above normal. good sized swells,
though. some erosion. Very strong winds from the east, makes me think we're in
the NE quadrant. Looking at the white spot, that makes sense. I would hope
that this is as strong as the winds are anywhere else. Still not big hurricane
strength, but not baby breeze, either.

from Julian downtown at 1am
=====
Joe is getting stronger winds up north. Annie, JuJu and
I made it fairly easy to the municipal dock to assess the situation and
winds are fairly strong, not unbearable yet.

The waves coming to shore are higher than I have seen all day long but the
piers seem to be holding OK so far.

The transport wardens are circling around town in vehicles to make sure the
curfew is maintained, etc, too.

from downtown, 1:15am:

Another big squall is forming in the east and I think it will pour again in
the next 30 minutes or so.

1:30 am, The winds have shifted again and blowing from the south now, dying down
just a bit.

by the satellite it looks like it ought to be dropping off in intensity, but who knows for sure...

All I see is this storm DRIFTING OVER THE CAYES AGAIN! There is no NORTHWARD movement.
It's just sitting there and laying off massive winds and rain....I'VE SEEN THIS BEFORE!
Damn, sorry that it doesn't get out of TOWN!

I am getting the feeling that with the Chetumal bay, and the area behind Ambergris, it forms some kind of eddy that is very disturbing....since we are now dealing with a change in the basic route of storms....it's bad news. This thing is just sitting there like the last one and expanding...
Posted By: rickcheri Re: Midnite weather reports - 08/21/01 09:08 AM
have faith, my friend, it's coming our way.... but I know what you mean, last time was crazy.... got to go for now, but see you all in the AM.... Rick

I am hoping it keeps moving northwest - what's this about South?? or staying put - doesn't sound good to me.
