Xunantunich open, El Castillo summit closed - 06/05/09 02:46 AM
From the Archaeology Museum & Research Centre:
This is to confirm that the Xunantunich Archaeological Reserve is currently open. Our Conservation Technician conducted an assessment after the recent earthquake and some structural damage occurred to the El Castillo Temple. In order to repair the vaulted rooms that support the floor of the roof comb, the El Castillo summit will be closed for one month effective the 2nd of June 2009.
Please also note that only the summit of the El Castillo will be closed and access to the Xunantunich East and West Freezes will still be open. The Institute of Archaeology, NICH, regrets any inconveniencies and the conservation intervention is necessary to stabilize the floor of the roof comb.
