Belize Disaster Team aids Mexico

As Hurrican Wilma was pounding destruction over the Yucatan, a group
of Belizeans worked throughout the night preparing for their before
dawn departure to provide hurricane relief to the injured and maimed
in Mexico.

The Belize Disaster and Rescue Response Team, sponsored by Ian
Anderson's Caves Branch left Caves Branch at 4:30 am on October 23rd
in a convoy of 4 wheel drives, vans and over 2000 lbs of relief
supplies and medicine.

With the assistance of Mexican Ambassador Trejo the BDARRT team
passed through the Mexican border and are now in Playa Del Carmen,
one of the worst hit and effected areas of the Yucatan peninsula.

Two training directors of the Belize Disaster and Rescue Response
Team, Mr. Bruce Hagen and Dr. Keith Brown have flown into Belize from
the US. and along with a number of additional team members are on
route to assist the Belize team already in place.

During the first 24 hours on site at Playa Del Carmen, the BDARRT has
provided relief and medical services to over 1,000 persons and are
working hand in hand with the Mexican Red Cross.

Two members of the Rescue Team are Lynwen Griffiths and Walter Santos
who just arrived back last month from being the first Belizeans to
K2.

The Belize Disaster and Rescue Response Team would like to thank
Ambassador Trejo for his undaunting assistance in expediting our
crossing into Mexico.

Any persons wishing to assist our Belizean Rescue Teams work in
Mexico by making donations can contact Ian Anderson, National
Coordinator, at 822 2800.
