A PORTION OF THE NORTHERN HIGHWAY TO BE REPAIRED
December 07, 2006

Drivers who use the Northern Highway between the Haulover Bridge and Belize City will be relieved to hear that the Ministry of Works will begin repair work on that portion of the road. The road work according to Chief Engineer, Cadet Henderson will start as of next week and will encompass major repair.

Cadet Henderson:Chief Engineer

"Essentially we initiate a phase upgrading a section of the highway between Chetumal Street and Juliet Soberanis Street in excess of 1,600 ft in the first phase and we have some contract in place and we are stock pilling materials as we speak and Monday or Tuesday next week we start with actual scarification and lifting of the road in that area. This is what I call semi permanent upgrading we have a proposal for over ten years now to upgrade to a boulevard formation from Buttonwood Bay boulevard to all the way to Haulover bridge for that major multi million dollar initiative, for now what we are doing is lifting the area which will mitigate much of the flooding and compliment that with drainage linking the side drains in the area with the Haulover creek as well as the sea. It will reduce the risk of flooding in that area when I say reducing we have more than eight inches of rain fall in many parts of Belize City will be flooded but this lift will be at least one foot in this vicinity and so with the drainage that will compliment this lifting in the area as you know this area continue to settle over the years, its one of the worst areas to do street or road work in the entire country so it is a very challenging area but for now we are not doing patching we are scarifying we are ripping up the existing pavement and we will put in new base course and new pavement."

Henderson says the road works will take a few weeks and in its first phase, around a quarter million dollars will be spent.
Great news.... thanks for sharing smile
