One San Pedro business owner is giving the gift of education. Mukul Kanabar owns Paradise Management, Blue Water Grill, Caliente Red Ginger, Wine Divine and the Phoenix Resort.

He employs 93 employees across all his businesses and he's offering high school tuition scholarships to one child of each employee. That's 79 scholarships over a ten year period - and he told our colleagues at the San Pedro sun more:

Mukul Kanabar
"The program is to offer each employee one full scholarship to San Pedro high school for one of their children. In 2011 the current school year that will be 13 full scholarships. Our staff currently has 79 children in primary school, so the scope of this project is going to grow large over the next 5-10 years. Selfishly having more educated people, more kids here with high school diplomas helps us. Those are the kids, those are the men and women that we will be hiring in years to come."

In the first phase of the program which started this year, 13 students will benefit from the scholarship program that will cost approximately $25,000.00 in the first year.

The businesses are owned by Kanabar and his wife Kelly McDermott Kanabar.

Press Release - December 20, 2011 - San Pedro, Belize - Family of businesses to provide a full scholarship for 4 years to San Pedro High School to 1 child of each employee.

In their continued effort to make a difference in the community and to improve the lives of their employees across the family of businesses, The Phoenix Resort, Blue Water Grill, Wine de Vine, Caliente, and Red Ginger launched a program to provide a full scholarship to San Pedro High School for a child of each employee.

"I am proud that our businesses, through the support of our great customers, are able to make this commitment to the high school education of children in San Pedro," said Kelly McDermott Kanabar. "In the current school year, we will be providing 13 kids with full scholarships to San Pedro High School. Our staff currently have 79 children in Primary School and we want them all to graduate from High School one day, so we fully expect our commitment to this program to grow in the coming years. Mukul and I are excited to have this opportunity to help make Belize a better place."

Annual tuition at San Pedro RC Primary School is $80. However, tuition for San Pedro High School starts at $800 per year and can go as high as $1,600, not including uniforms and other costs. "The cost of High School can easily approach $2,000 per year," Mukul Kanabar said. "As a result, many students drop out of school because their families cannot afford it. In fact, there are nearly 900 students at San Pedro RC Primary School, which is only one of several primary level schools in San Pedro, while there are less than 500 students at San Pedro High School, the only high school in San Pedro."

Although we don't have the number of employees that they have, they inspired us to do the same with our employees' children. Thanks for the inspiration!
Wonderful. I hope that this will be an inspiration to many more businesses too. What a great way to build a great future for Belize.
This is a very thoughtful and useful benefit for the staff, the great thing it does not upset the local economy and helps with so much on family level. Super Job Mukul & Kelly we are so happy to see this generation of business people move forward in such a positive way. This will inspire us as well to do what we can in our own small way.
Indeed - well done!!
This is a gift to us all.
Thrilled to see this happening. It is good to see other businesses being inspired to do the same.

A truely wonderful gift for the future of Belize.

That is fantastic Kelly and Mukul.

For only $2,000 BZ per child per year our kids can obtain a high school education and enjoy being a kid. The San Pedro High School is happy to coordinate with donors and sponsors to identify students that are gifted but may need to drop out due to financial burden.
