HI!

I'm new to this board and hope to garner alot of info before our trip the first week in November!

Can anyone steer us to some safe nightspots in San Pedro where we can listen to music & enjoy a few libations?? My husband and I like music and would like to visit a few local spots.

Also, shopping - any suggestions for a special remembrance of our trip? We are celebrating our 34th wedding anniversary with this trip.

We are staying at Cayo Espanto and will be visiting San Pedro a few times I'm sure.

Any help is appreciated.

Check out for shopping:

1. Black coral jewelry made in San Pedro (Cottage Gift Shop for one) - they can probably create something special for you.

2. Paintings by local artists - there are 4 or so galleries in town: Fido's courtyard, south end of middle street, middle part of middle street, Sunbreeze Hotel. Local, wonderful artists: Marcos, Orlando, Walter Castillo and others.

Also, recommend you ask your Cayo Espanto hosts for special ideas. You'll love the service at Espanto. Happy anniversary!

Try Fido's for both music/drinks as well as great custom made jewelry by Elisabeth at Ambar (located inside Fido's courtyard)

Sandy & Barbara,

Thanks for the info!!

Another question - someone mentioned a casino in San Pedro - is it worth checking out?

The Casino is very small. They have a varity of tables and slots. I only went in to look around when it was new, not to gamble so I really can't tell you about whether it woud "pay" to play.
We arrive 11-8-03. YEEEEAAAAHHHH!!!

Personally I love Palace Casino, nice friendly staff, fun, and you will meet alot of locals for chatting. I only play the slots, and win enough to keep me playing.

Shops mentioned above are all great.

Ramon's gift shop has a wide variety of really nice things.

If you get over to Caye Caulker, go to SilkPainter's Art shop, great selections.

On Pescador in San Pedro, The Beauty of Nature Gift Shop, great colorful art, including wooden chairs and tables, that are easily carried home.

I've had a lot of fun at the Palace Casino.

Has the new casino opened yet?

You're welcome. Another great local artist is Papo.

Another question

Are credit cards - MC or AMEX accepted at night spots, i.e. Fido's and shops?

Is it better to take all traveler's checks?

Any ATM machines in San Pedro?

I know Master Card and Visa are accepted most places. I'm not sure about American Express.

Last I knew there was still no ATM for tourists in San Pedro.

I've always found it easier to take travelers cheques. I've found them easily accepted and/or easily changed to money. I start off with $500 in US cash and bring the balance in TC. I usually charge my diving and acco on my credit card but very little else. That way I don't windup with too many surprises popping up on my statement, due to evening activities.

There are a number of places for nightlife fun and Fidos is only one of them. Don't worry, you shouldn't have any trouble finding the other places and may even be lucky enough to come across some off the beaten path, that you will enjoy. Just ask around. You'll want to see the Punta Boyz usually playing at Crazy Canuks on Sunday or Monday Night (can't remember just now)and you can also catch them at Shark's Bar on Tuesdays. For some reason, I just always enjoy the show at Crazy Canuks better.

You should see Barefoot Skinny at Mango's on Monday's. Very cool show!
It's actually better to use Traveller's Checks. You aren't charged a "service fee", even though the merchants aren't supposed to charge you for it. It's just a cost of doing business, but it can add on some hefty bucks that you aren't ready for, since most merchants add it onto your total without telling you.
Cheerz.

My experiences with credit cards has been that the cr card co (visa, m/c etc) are the ones that charge a fee for currancy conversion NOT the San Pedro businesses. I learned this in 1994 and have avoided using my card ever since. I argued with the CSR at Visa to no avail. Even though San Pedro has a fixed conversion (2 Bze to 1 US), they charge about 4.5%.
