Planning a trip with two friends for Dec 10-18 and
Would love to have advice on where to stay on AC.

We are looking for a place that is close to nightlife but gives us access to kayaking, snorkelling, fly fishing, beach lounging.

Any hotels with 3bed rooms, on the beach and clean/updated?

Is it better to be North of the river or south?

Water taxi or puddle jumper?

well just answering a couple of your questions:

If you want to be close to the nightlife then you want to be south of the cut, closer to town...

definitely the air transfer: 14 minutes versus forever on boat. eek

Check out The Palms (next to Ramon's). These are condos you can rent. I stayed in a 1 BR with a sleeper sofa but I'll bet they have some that would sleep 3. Or hang up the hammock on the porch and drift away.....

Water Taxis and puddle jumpers are ALL part of the adventure. Fly one way and take the taxi the other.
It is interesting to fly into some place and then boat in, you will usually experience some interesting differences. Do it all! wink

It depends on what price range you're looking for as to where to stay. Here's a web site for ideas. We stayed at Holiday Hotel in 1998, our first time to Belize (Ambergris Caye). It was in town, close to everything, one room, no TV or pool, but clean. The second time we stayed at Playador now known as Exotic Caye's Hotel. They have nice cabanas, pool and nice beach. It's about 1/4 mile from town (within walking distance). We've made eight trips in all. Since then we bought a condo at Belize Yacht Club, but rent it out year round to a nice couple who live there, so we stay at another unit. It's quite there, a small pool but no real beach. Ramon's is nice with a good size beach. Banana Beach or Sunbreeze Hotel are also good choices.

Then there is Caye Caulker, which is years behind Ambergris Caye. Very laid back small island village. Caye Caulker, Belize - Vacation Travel Information <http://www.belize-vacation.com/caye-caulker/caye-caulker.htm>

If you prefer the mainland Placenia has nice beaches. We only stayed there once at Kitty's. The movie director Francis Cappola has a resort there Turtle Inn.

If you choose Ambergris Caye, there's probably more to do. Most all resorts have BBQ nite with entertainment. There is a small casino & at least two night clubs. Wednesday night is the "World Famous Chicken Drop" at the Pier Lounge. They put a large Bingo card in the sand, force feed a chicken, and people bet on the number where they think it will do it's business.

There's a lot of great restaurants. Middle Street has a lot of good ones. Corina Caramba, Reef Restaurant, & Micky's are favorites of the locals. We find that if you dine where the locals dine, you get the best food for the best price. Elvi's is nice, also on Middle St. Celi's & Fido's are good choices. George's Kitchen across from the Woody's has great breakfast. Belize Restaurants, Dinner, Lunch, Meals, Delicious, Food, Dining, Restaurants <//ambergriscaye.com/pages/goodscv/restaurants.html> If you have kids and want something to do in the evening, a miniature Golf has just open, about 1/4 mile south from town. The money is easy to figure out, $10 BZ is $5 US. I hope you find this info informative. I know you will enjoy Belize as I do. The people are so friendly. I can't wait until I can spend months at a time there.

Exotic Caye has 2 bedroom delux rooms that are really nice - 4 of us went and we each had our own bed - 2 bedrooms (each with a full) and a loft (with a full) with a separate room (with a full).

You could visit www.sanpedrojazzfestival.com and take advantage of the festival to get you a nice bit off your room rate, granted its not for any down south but the North wins hands down anyway!!! I know this is a blatant plug but it's worth it dont ya think.

I went to the jazz festival site and took a look at accomodtions... I was puzzled as to why, with journey's end right next door to the festival why it wasn't on the list...? eek

Not sure where you are flying from, but we went through them for our package to AC. I just got back from there last Thursday and had a great time. It was me, my boyfriend, and a friend of ours. We stayed at the resort offered in the package, Banana Beach, and really liked it. It was really nice and right on the beach. My boyfriend and I had our own bed (a king I think)and they brought in a twin bed for our friend. So they will accomodate you with whatever you need. If you want 3 seperate beds they will do that for you. Check out the link though because it is affordable.

My wife and I are big fans of White Sands Cove Resort which is just north of the cut. We have been there twice and plan on going back again next year. They have one and two-bedroom condos which are much nicer than any of the other rooms we have seen on the island. The managers/owners, mother and daughter, are very nice and willing to help out whenever they can.

The resort is clean private and convenient to town and very resonably priced. The only drawback is that they don't have a restaurant on the premises, but they do have full kitchens in the units and we have eaten at Captain Morgan's and Capricorn every time we have been there and both are less than a 15 min. walk away. All of their units have futons, so I'm pretty sure that their 2-bedroom unit has three beds.

They have kayaks on the premises and they offer fishing, diving, snorkeling, etc and are the first resort north of town (7 minutes away). We'd highly recommend checking them out.

I just got back from AC. already missing it. We stayed at Banana Beach and loved it. The food, staff, accomodations were more than we hoped.

If you go - ask Monkey Business to arrange the Shark Ray tour with L'il Alfonso - the guy's knows so much and obviously loves and respects the sea critters.

Now, about Victoria House... is it as cool as it looks online?

Yes. It might even be cooler than it looks on line.

Thanks Seashell. We are totally looking forward to this trip and I hope to frequent these boards often to learn more before our trip.

Could you tell me more about the Banana Beach Resort? Is it located in or near town and what is the beach like? Suitable for a beach holiday?
Posted By: obtuseangler Re: Where to Stay in Ambergris? - 10/27/05 10:09 PM
Banana Beach is about a 1/2 hour walk south of town (or a $5 cab ride). I had a great stay there last February and will be returning again this winter. The beach is small and bulkheaded (a drop, not a slope into the water)and not great for swimming due to the beach grass. however it's a short walk north or south to somewhat more expansive (relatively speaking) beaches.

Q. Suitable for a beach holiday? yes, but its not sweeping white sand beaches that go on seemingly forever. If that is what you're expecting, you'll be disappointed.

That said, the rooms are very nice, the service is excellent and the restaurant on premises, El Divino is among the best on the island.

My two cents for Banyan Bay. Great place, 2 / 3 bed condo on water with full kitchen, patio/deck, restaurant, dive shop, great pool, beach, awesome staff

You better book NOW ynmaker !!!

My trip is planned for Dec 3-11th, and I tried to push forward to your dates, and everything was booked frown

For my next trip to AC, I'm definetly staying at Victoria House! That place looks amazing!
Posted By: MALIBU Re: Where to Stay in Ambergris? - 10/28/05 04:03 PM
We have never stayed at Vic Hse but Always stop in for a little liquid refreshment & view at the bar. A VERY nice looking place.
Posted By: cokelush Re: Where to Stay in Ambergris? - 10/28/05 04:17 PM
And VH is booking up fast as well... only avail. dates I can find for 06 are in july/aug/sept...
So... a poll of sorts:

Which month would you choose and why?
I hear skeeters and sandflies are fierce in sept... we have some guests who will be in the water much and some not so much. I'm thinking the weather will be much the same: hot and humid. I mean you guys are tropical after all. smile

Post away! The hardest part of planning this wedding has been the date... guess it had to be something. smile
Posted By: Hightide Re: Where to Stay in Ambergris? - 10/28/05 04:20 PM
IMHO - Victoria House has best pina coladas on island - a trip there is not complete without a morning walk up the beach to VH and breakfast with at least 2 of them (each)... When we were there last month we walked up there all set to have our Pina Colada fix and horror of horrors bar was closed for painting. Can you believe it? Painting takes precedence over Pina coladas? The universe is out of whack. We asked the workers if they could at least get to the blender. No go. I felt so robbed...

Oh Hightide, that is just wrong. I'll be sure to drink one for you when we are there!

I would recommend Casa Lisa or Casa Redondo, It's at the south end of the island. It has a beautiful beach and dock for swimming. Both houses are fully equipped and have privicy. We caught bonefish right off the dock every morning which was a blast. The owners are wonderful folks, which for my money put the place over the top. We enjoyed the night rides on our golf cart to town for dinner and drinks.
Good luck
John
