A few days ago some divers were treated to the rare sight of a pod of 15 or 16 dolphins swimming underwater just off AC. They stayed with the divers for about 20 minutes and a professional videographer (Sven Wilms) got some amazing footage. He's currently putting this on a DVD also including general footage above and below the water in Belize, for sale locally.

To put this in perspective, I know no-one who has seen more than a couple of dolphins at a time underwater. Nor has Sven, and between us we have more than 10,000 dives.

Don't mean to out dolphin you, but we got into a pod of hundreds as far as the eye can see sailing inside the reef off Placencia a few years ago. One of those wonderful moments in life no one there will ever forget.

When I went diving in the big San Pedro Cut a few years ago with Ambergris Divers owner - Roberto Canul, we were surrounded by a pod of about 15 dolphins including babies. It was fantastic. They hung back and watched us from a distance and then they began playing, jumping out of the water and racing around chasing each other.

I have to say I think that was the most memorable dive I ever had - only 1/4 mile off shore from the Sunbreeze hotel. Absolutely remarkable.

When you sail, or even motor out in the blue it is not unusual to see much larger pods, but if you stop and try and swim with them the dolphins take off pretty quickly.

The dolphins have to instigate the encounter, you can't make them come to you unless they want to. Having said that, every time we boat over to Caye Caulker or St. Georges we are typically graced with views of a few dolphins and the occasional manatee.

I'll post details of the video here - or I'll get Sven to register and post it himself. It should only take a day-or-two.
