talking to folks, there is NO constituency for a yes vote. it doesn't exist anywhere i ask around.

Said is obviously worried that if he doesn't do this, something WORSE will happen to him than firing cabinet members and putting Belize thru crisis. sure wonder what that THING might be...

Was it Mutabaruka that sang......

I think the bible and the ballot have almost been exhausted. "I hope this never happens in my country" VH Courtney during a 60 Minutes interview in the 80's. I can wholeheartedly concur with Mr. Courtney.

Marty, do you have a copy of this 60 Minutes episode. Maybe Emory has a copy. I've been looking for one for years.

Prime Minister calls urgent meeting of National Economic Council

Belmopan - 23 May, 2007

Members of the National Economic Council met this morning at the Central Bank conference room. The meeting was called by Prime Minister Rt. Hon. Said Musa, in an effort to update the members of the National Economic Council on the Universal Health Services (UHS) acquisition/loan.

Also present for this morning's Economic Council meeting were Minister of Health Hon. Jose Coye, Minister of Tourism, Hon. Godfrey Smith, and Attorney General and Minister of Labor Hon. Francis Fonseca.

Attending the meeting was a wide cross section of stakeholders representing the various unions that make up the National Trade Union Congress, the Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Belize Business Bureau; the five commercial banks: The Bank of Nova Scotia, First Caribbean Bank, Alliance Bank, Belize Bank, and Atlantic Bank; the Belize Tourism Board, the Banana Growers Association, the Citrus Growers Association, the National Garifuna Council, the Central Bank, Health for Progress, and the University of Belize. The meeting was organized by the secretariat from the Ministry of National Development and chaired by its CEO, Hugh O'Brien.

Prime Minister Musa opened the meeting by cataloging the sequence of events that eventually led to the UHS situation and the motion that was read in the House of Representatives last Friday. The motion seeks to enable the government to assume a loan made by UHS with the Belize Bank for twenty-nine million dollars, payable over twenty -five years at a rate of ten percent.

Prime Minister Musa explained that he felt that it was the right decision to guarantee the UHS loan with the Belize Bank in order to keep the doors of the hospital open, and to follow the policy of the government to pursue a social justice policy that would make health care affordable to all Belizeans.

He went on to explain that government is legally obligated to pay the Belize Bank; failure to do so would have a negative effect on the investor climate for Belize. "We need economic growth, but it must be buttressed by social justice", PM Musa told the Economic Council.

Minister of Health Hon. Jose Coye told the meeting that a due diligence interim report on UHS suggests that it can be made to operate profitable and be a viable entity once the appropriate measures are put in place.

Following the PM's presentation, there was a lively questions and answer session from the various representatives who make up the National Economic Council.

So the fix is in?
People: Do you realize...your grandkids will be paying for this!!!
This could play out a few different ways. Teachers and other Unions will be in Belmopan tomorrow, Belize Chamber last night voted to close on Friday AND withhold biz and sales taxes. Briceno and Courtenay still no, not sure about Coye, but his constituancy voted against, hoping for Baeza and Florencio Marin to vote no. I hear even Godfrey Smith could surprise us all with a no. Senate shakey too. Lots of scrambling on both sides and internationally behind the scenes. Stay tuned. See you in Belmopan manana.
Said pulled the bill. He did the impossible-united UDP and PUP, but against himself.
Thanks Katie...

Thanks Katie...GOOD INFO!!!

Interesting to see who and how many will show in Belmopan today now that UHS is off the table.
So help me out here. What does this mean as far as the status of the loan?
From what I heard last night a group of private investors will take on the loan with the government holding onto control of the operation.
No one is sure because no one believes anything Said says. Facts as we know them: Ashcroft wants his money. Private investors approached or were approached by GOB to buy UHS. Are these private investors the same people? Will they buy UHS for less than the current debt, ala Ashcroft with BTL? What tax relief will GOB offer them, so that in affect, taxpayers are still paying. What will happen in the House today with future BTL and BEL tax deferments that PUC did not approve?
Private investors are going to come up with the money and have the GOB control it. laugh

That should bring more criminals to Belize. Any arrested felon trying to use insanity as a defense will want to get in on that deal.
Should be noted that yesterdays demonstration attracted people from all segments and both parties and was calm, peaceful and reflected political maturity in a young 26 yr old country trying to makes its way forward.

amen to that.
Furthermore, Mark and Cordell are not out yet as the PM has not sumitted their removal to the General Governor and thinking is Said removed them to get thru last week, but knows he/the party will need them for next elections.
