Christmas is the time for sharing love, hope and lots of cheer. And what a perfect time to share the gift of mobility to those less fortunate; that is what the Wheelchair Foundation along with Wines for Wheels in California and the Belize Rotary Club brought to San Pedro and the country of Belize.

Of the 210 wheelchairs brought to the country 35 were distributed here in San Pedro, 16 in Caye Caulker and the rest was distributed in Belize City. Forty-eight volunteers from the Wheelchair foundation flew in to Belize to distribute their donations.

The Wheelchair Foundation and Wines for Wheels in California have donated over 800,000 wheelchairs in 154 countries worldwide. And with this gift of over 200 handed over this week, more than 1,000 of those chairs have been gifted to Belize.

Much thanks to the Wheelchair Foundation, Wines for Wheels and the Belize Rotary Club for this kind donation to those in need of the gift of mobility. Many Blessings to All!

International Wheelchair Foundation donates 35 wheelchairs to SP

The International Wheelchair Foundation handed over wheelchairs to 35 people in San Pedro Town on Wednesday afternoon. The donation was made in a special ceremony at the San Pedro Town Central Park. Since 2006, The International Wheelchair Foundation has been visiting Belize and this year 206 wheelchairs will be distributed countrywide.

One of the volunteers of the International Wheelchair Foundation is Glenn Perry, who is a member of Sueo Del Mar. According to Perry, the international organization had donated over 800,000 wheelchairs in 140 countries. "Wheelchairs to us are the essence of goodness," stated Perry. He added that, "it gives hope, it gives mobility and does not only change and individual and the family but also the community."

The wheelchairs were assembled by the volunteers. Following the brief ceremony the wheelchairs were handed over to the residents and their families. The wheelchairs came in four different sizes and are originally made in China. Factory cost by wholesale is about US $150 but in Belize the same type of wheelchair is estimated at about $1000. The 50 volunteers are all from North Carolina in the USA. As part of their visit on the island, the San Pedro Lions hosted them to lunch just before the handing over ceremony.

What a great gift for the holidays. With the new paved roads it will be a lot less problem for the recipients to get around town.

I just hope the taxi guys take notice.
And they look like they have off road tires! Just what you'd need in SP and Caye Caulker. Awesome.
Should probably provide a pair of gloves with them too, given the terrain.
