I could be missing something really obvious, but is there a reason why some of the Caribbean islands choose to bury sargassum in the beach sand as opposed to using it as potential compost, especially since most of these islands are either primarily coral or volcanic, either needing some nutritive input.....?

Seems like a no-brainer to me.

It appears to me that Belize (wisely) composts theirs.

I will say this Robert, our experience has been that when you remove the weed from the beach a portion of the beach sand goes with the weed...and when you remove a lot of weed from the beach well you get the picture...we've started burying in order to retain the beach and actually we've gained some beach (with sand) as a result.
