Taxi and motorcycle collide in Airstrip Area
On Friday, September 23rd, the San Pedro Traffic Department (SPTD) responded to a traffic accident in the Airstrip Area of San Pedro Town. The accident happened around 11:30AM, and involved a parked taxi car and a motorcycle. According to official reports, the motorcycle driver was passing by when the taxi driver opened the door to his parked car, causing the motorcycle to crash. The victim has been identified as George Malic, and the taxi driver is Geovanni Reyes. Malic suffered minor injuries, while Reyes' vehicle received slight cosmetic damage. Chris Nuez, Head of the San Pedro Traffic Department (SPTD), stated that the taxi was the culprit in the accident. "Reports indicate how Reyes was parked in the wrong direction, and when the motorcycle was passing by, Reyes opened his car door, and caused the accident," said Nuez.

Minister of Tourism, Culture and Civil Aviation Honorable Manuel Heredia Jr has donated a new, 2016 Mazda s3 truck to the San Pedro Police Department (SPPD). On September 7th, the new vehicle labeled "Tourism Police" was specifically given over to help alleviate crimes against tourists. Receiving the donation was Officer in Charge of the San Pedro Police Sub-Formation, Superintendent Sandra Bowden. She is thankful for the donation, as it will go a long-way in aiding them to work on tourism safety. She has also appointed Police Constable Saldano to carry out these special duties, as well as increasing police patrols.

MOH talks Zika at public meeting in Caye Caulker
Any suspicions of the disease should be reported to the local health centres. Seeking attention at private clinics, which are beginning to offer a speedy test, is strong discouraged. "Those express tests are not accurate, thus, we continue encouraging everyone to report any potential cases to the relevant authorities," said Badillo. Currently, tests are only being offered to pregnant women, children between the ages of 0-5 and elderly persons above 65 years of age. Badillo explained that the MOH can only send a certain amount of specimens to the Caribbean Public Health Agency in Trinidad and Tobago where Zika testing labs are located. "You can still go to the clinics and let them know that you have the symptoms, but since the resources are limited in the Government, your name is put on a list, and whenever a batch of samples are sent to be examined, only a small amount of specimens are sent and we are not guaranteeing that every single one that is reported gets tested," said Badillo. A very important recommendation given to persons infected is to seek isolation in order to not spread the disease. At the moment, there are no medications for Zika, and usually the body's immune system fights it off.

35th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Belize and Mexico
Thirty Five years of diplomatic relations - Yesterday, Mexico and Belize commemorated the 35th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations, which started in 1981, coinciding with the proclamation of the Belizean independence from the United Kingdom. Mexico was the first country to establish diplomatic relations with Belize and ever since it has developed strong links with its neighboring country, which have been characterized by a cordial and constructive dialogue, a robust legal framework and extensive cooperation in areas such as health, energy, tourism, security, education, culture and scientific and technical cooperation. As neighbors and strategic partners, Mexico shares with Belize a 288 kilometer border that has two official border crossings connecting the towns of Subteniente Lopez, Quintana Roo, Mexico and Santa Elena, Corozal, Belize. In addition to that, the Central American and Caribbean links shared by the two countries have facilitated dialogue with both sub-regions.

ZIKA Cases Mounting, 21 Pregnant Women Diagnosed
Belize could be facing a full blown Zika crisis. Five pregnant women have tested positive for ZIKA, and as many as 21 have been clinically diagnosed. That's what today's Amandala is reporting. The paper says that 341 cases of Zika have been reported in Belize and 42 cases have been confirmed by testing. The greatest number of cases have been reported in the Belize District, with the second most in Cayo and the fewest in the North. Detection of new cases has stepped up since Hurricane Earl. The Ministry of Health didn't want to discuss the new numbers today and told us that a press conference will be held on Tuesday where the full Zika picture will be laid out.

Dodgy Drafting on BTL Settlement Opens Up Huge Hard Currency Dispute Between GOB and AA
On Monday's news, we brought you coverage of the Caribbean Court of Justice's teleconference hearing trying to resolve the latest fight between the Barrow Government and the Ashcroft Alliance over BTL. They can't agree on whether the half a billion dollar settlement should be paid in US Dollars, or Belizean dollars. Now, while a fight over currency may appear trivial, it is important because the currency determines who gets a bigger piece of the pie for the final settlement - and it also determines how easily government can pay it. Now, to understand it all - we have to back to the infamous Accommodation Agreement, signed by the then Musa Administration, which ultimately triggered the nationalization of BTL, and that led to the prolonged legal battle between the Ashcroft Alliance and the Barrow administration. Well, to try to settle it, they both agreed to let the arbitrators at the Permanent Council on Arbitration determine the value of the shares that the Government took away from the Alliance. It was expected that the Accommodation Agreement would drive up the value of the final settlement figures, and so, the two sides agreed that there would be a separation of the value between the book value of the, and the additional value derived from the Accommodation Agreement.

Second Payment, A Pecuniary Pain For GOB
The PM spoke to us after a nearly five hour meeting with the Teachers Union, which went late into the evening. That's why he was only willing to take a few questions. We did use the opportunity to ask about how the Government intends to make the second payment to the Ashcroft Alliance. Coming out of Tuesday's CCJ hearing, Financial Secretary Joseph Waight told us that the Government will have to borrow 150 million dollars to make the second payment. We asked the Prime Minister to explain: Daniel Ortiz, 7news: "Was this in the works from the time this settlement was on the horizon?" Rt. Hon. Dean Barrow - Prime Minister: "We didn't know what the arbitration award would be, but from the time the award came down, we knew that we would be paying in two tranches. The first tranches in year one and the second tranche in year two so we borrowed enough to meet the first payment and it is clear that we will have to borrow to meet the second payment. This is all domestic borrowing by way of the treasury bills and notes. So we are perfectly prepared to do that next year when we will need to make that second and final payment."

One Year Later, "ET" Gets Off Sodomy Charge
In October of 2015, Basil Willis, known as "ET", of Black Orchid Street in Belize City, was charged for raping a 23 year old man behind the Marion Jones Sports Complex. Following Willis's imprisonment without plea, the DPP ordered a written mental evaluation of the victim so that a decision could be made about how to charge Willis. She did this after the victim seemed unstable in a meeting with the DPP's office. That was last year, but today in the Magistrate's Court, no written evaluation was produced, which allowed Willis to walk away a free man - after 11 months in jail.

McAfee and The Money Order
John McAfee today stepped up his vigorous campaign against the documentary about his turbulent time in Belize. The documentary premieres tomorrow night on Showtime, but McAfee's going all out to discredit it before it goes to air. He's coordinating no less than an international smear campaign in Belize, the USA, and the world, via the internet. So far, McAfee has gotten testimonials from a handful of interview subjects, and posted interviews or sworn statements from others disclaiming their involvement in the documentary or questioning its conclusions.

Morales Makes Mischief At UN
Right now, Belizean patriots are fuming after Guatemalan President Jimmy Morales took yet another swipe at Belize. Morales spoke on the world Stage at the United Nation's 71st General Assembly in New York, and made it clear that his country just won't let up on the fatal shooting of 14 year-old Julio Ruano, even though Belize's law enforcement team was vindicated in an Independent OAS Investigation. And yesterday, making his debut his amongst world leaders at the UN, Morales used a small section of his first address to continue his country's international campaign against Belize. Here's that moment at the UN Assembly when he suggested that this shooting and other Guatemalan fatalities in the Chiquibul, has hurt bilateral relations:

Kadeem Took The Rap For Revolver
On Thursday, the GSU searched the home of Steven and Kadeem Bradley on Sitee Street in Belize City. They found one unloaded .38 revolver pistol. Both brothers had no license for the gun so they were arrested and charged with keeping an unlicensed firearm. They were taken to court, where Steven, who pled guilty, said that he was holding the gun for a friend. He was sentenced to 5 years in prison with eligibility for parole after serving the first half of his sentence. Kadeem, who was charged with his brother, was allowed to go free after Stevens guilty plea was accepted.

Police Minister's Son Kryston Carjacked
The son of police minister Godwin Hulse was carjacked last night in Belize City - and the thieves made off with a vehicle belonging to the Minister's wife. 24 year old Kryston Hulse reported to police that last night he was on Marine Parade with his girlfriend in his mother's Four Runner. That's when three men rolled up in a car, and one of them pulled a gun on him and demanded the keys. Fearing for his life, he handed over the keys and two of them drove off in the Four Runner, while the other left in a Mazda car. Police have made no arrests and have not recovered the SUV.

7 Weeks after Earl, Sanker Street "Sufferahs"
7 weeks after the storm, a Sanker Street family in the Port Loyola Area is still contending with the aftermath of Hurricane Earl. Sheryl Murrillo and her 4 kids have been living at her boyfriend's house for 14 years. It has always been a challenge because they all sleep in one bedroom. But Hurricane Earl wrecked the little they had. Their roof and siding were ripped off in the storm and they have been trying to restore their lives. Although The Belize Red Cross and NEMO have helped them, they still need a lot more help. Murrillo told us more about their living situation today. Courtney Weatherburne, 7News: "After the hurricane came, what did you find?" Sheryl Murrillo, "Earl Destroyed My Home": "Well, I found the roof off, the chair wet, bed wet, the speaker wet, and that's about it. My fence was blown down." Courtney Weatherburne, 7News: "So you lost a lot, how much would you say you lost in cost value?" Sheryl Murrillo, "Earl Destroyed My Home": "I would say about over a thousand dollars."

After The Storm, "Dignity Kits" For Girls and Ladies
And while that family needs urgent restorative help, other storm-affected families have needs of a more personal nature. Today, the United Nations Population Fund handed over 100 pieces of what are called "Dignity Kits" to the Ministry of Human Development. Now if you're wondering what a "Dignity Kit" is - that's what we asked today: Lliani Arthurs, Ministry of Human Development "The Ministry of Human Development is the Chair for the relief and supply committee of NEMO. So we are the first responders for people affected by the recent hurricane Earl. We had teams in the affected areas of the different communities and we identified different needs of those communities. One of those needs were basic hygiene needs for women and children - for women and girls and also some of our elderly populations. So we made a request to UNFPA for partnership and support in terms of their dignity kits, and so they positively responded, and now today they are handing over the 100 dignity kits."

Pres. Morales' Brother, Son In Corruption Probe
In our last segment, you saw Guatemalan President Jimmy Morales using the UN's global platform to "throw shade" at Belize. On one level, patriots may find it infuriating, but on another level, you've got to understand that the man needs a distraction, and the BDF bogeyman is one of the best he has. One of the main things he needs a distraction from is the fact that, his brother and his son are being scrutinized by their country's Attorney General's Office for suspicious payments, which those authorities want to make sure isn't corruption. News reports out of Guatemala say that Samuel "Sammy" Morales, President' Jimmy Morales' older brother, and a close advisor, and Jose Manuel Morales, one of the President's 4 sons, were barred by a judge from leaving the country, pending an investigation into whether or not they were involved in irregular payments. The president is under added pressure, because he was elected on a strict anti-corruption platform. His predecessor is currently in jail on corruption charges.

Deceased Constable Hall Had It Hard At The End
Last night we told you about Police Constable Jason Hall, who passed away Tuesday. He's the officer from Precinct 3 in Belize City who made the news in July 2015 after he was viciously beaten by a man who pretended to be a good Samaritan. That man offered to help him fix a blowout, but instead, he attacked Hall, stole his car, and left him unconscious on the side of the road. Hall was left in a coma due to head injuries, and a few months later, almost as though, he couldn't catch a break, he was diagnosed with cancer. We got a chance to speak to his close friend and colleague, Fitzroy Yearwood, who told us how they got devastating news of his passing on the eve of Independence Day: Insp. Fitzroy Yearwood, Fellow Officer/Superior: "PC Hall, after recovering from that unfortunate incident that you guys helped me with that fundraising for, he began complaining about pain to the back. I worked with him from his day of recovery which was the 1st of October 2015 until I was transferred the end of January 2016.

Hawkesworth Shook Today, Urgent Repairs Activated
Last month, Hurricane Earl washed away the temporary low-lying bridge in San Ignacio, and today the Hawkesworth Bridge had to be shut down when it started shaking. The Ministry of Works Engineer called for urgent and immediate repairs after a shaky portion was identified. Experts from Mexico were rushed in, and the bridge was shut down this afternoon at ten-minute intervals so that repairs could be done without interrupting regular traffic - since there's now only one bridge. The bridge was checked again after repairs were completed and deemed ready for public use. Mayor Earl Trapp tells us that the temporary bridge - which was destroyed by Hurricane Earl will be re-opened in the next two weeks.

Regional Volleyball Tournament Starts in Belize
Today is the last day of practice for the Belize National Men's Volleyball Team, and the seven other teams from Central America and the Caribbean who are here for the FBVI Men's World Championship Qualification Tournament. We stopped by during practice and asked them if they're ready: Delio Arruebarrena, Head Coach: "We'll have to take it a game at a time, a set at a time, because with the preparation that the team has they have the ability and the capacity to do good. So they just have to take it in stride as it comes. We know it's not easy, but the guys can do it because they have the training and preparation."

Cop succumbs 15 months after he was attacked by "Good Samaritan"
Exemplary police constable Jason Hall, 37, of Corozal Town died after suffering for 15 months with massive injuries to his head and body after he was beaten with a piece of wood by a robber pretending to be a good Samaritan, who robbed him on the morning of June 30, 2015, on the Philip Goldson Highway in the Rhaburn Ridge area, at about Mile 37. Hall died at his home in Corozal Town at about 6:30 this evening. We were told that before he died, he called his wife and told her that he was going to leave her, and she was at his bedside when he died. Hall's body was deposited at the morgue, where it will undergo a mandatory post-mortem examination to certify the cause of his death. Police say that at about 7:00 that fateful morning last year, PC Jason Hall, originally from Corozal Town, attached to Precinct 3 Belize City, was driving his Mazda car from Corozal Town to his workplace at Precinct 3 at the Queen Street Police Station in Belize City, when on arriving in Rhaburn Ridge, the car suffered a 2-wheel blowout.

$10,000 plus 3 years for 148 pounds of weed
Two men, one from Belize City and the other from Cayo, were sentenced to three years in prison and fined the minimum $10,000 fine for the offense of drug trafficking. If they default on paying the fine, they will have to serve an additional three years behind bars. The two were convicted of trafficking 148 pounds of cannabis when their case concluded before Magistrate Deborah Rogers, after several months of being before the court. Magistrate Rogers explained in her ruling that she found the men guilty after carefully dissecting the evidence the prosecution brought against them. On June 17, 2015, four persons were inside a car in which there were two suitcases of cannabis.

Militant teachers bring heat on Barrow!
The inclement weather hanging over the country did not deter the thousands of teachers who stayed out of their classrooms this morning, to send home the message of their discontent with the United Democratic Party government of Prime Minister Dean Barrow, which has failed to convince them to accept a deferral of the three percent salary adjustment that had previously been agreed upon between the BNTU leadership and the government. The mood in Belmopan was made more somber by the weather and the presence of a large detachment of police, made up mostly of recruits from the police's training school, that stood as a barrier between the protesters and the National Assembly building after the teachers held their rally inside the Belmopan Civic Center, which overflowed outside with hundreds of teachers under tents set up for the occasion, before they marched onto the steps of the National Assembly building, where the peaceful protest ended shortly after 1:00 p.m.

$$$ for lies!
The United States entertainment network Showtime, a subsidiary of the CBS television network, has been advertising the release date of Gringo, a documentary about John McAfee, the US anti-virus maker whose time in Belize ended abruptly with his sudden flight in the wake of the murder of his neighbor, Gregory Faull. Faull, an American contractor who resided on northern Ambergris Caye, was found shot to death inside his house on November 11, 2012. McAfee eluded Belize police who wanted to question him about Faull's death, and crossed the border into Guatemala, where he was arrested and held briefly before he was allowed to proceed to the US. Showtime has followed closely in the path of another US network, NBC Dateline, which visited Belize last fall in search of the story about Gregory Faull's unsolved murder, on which it based a mini-series, which was hosted by its foreign correspondent, Richard Engle.

Suspected Zika cases exceed 300
Zika continues to capture health headlines across the globe and in Belize, the Ministry of Health is on heightened surveillance to track Zika, particularly in pregnant women. To date, five women in Belize have tested positive for Zika, a condition said to be linked to a range of potential neurological birth defects, including microcephaly. However, suspected cases among pregnant women who have been clinically assessed amount to 21. The Ministry of Health indicates that to date, 341 suspected cases of Zika have been reported in Belize, and 42 have been confirmed through laboratory testing. Roughly half of the cases (167 suspected and 21 confirmed) have emerged in the Belize District, in places such as Caye Caulker, where there has been a noticeable cluster of Zika cases, and Belize City; and a quarter of the cases (87 suspected and 10 confirmed) have been documented in the Cayo District, in places such as St. Margaret's Village and Armenia Village.

Evangelical Churches appeal ruling on Section 53 sodomy law
Today, exactly 21 days after Chief Justice Kenneth Benjamin issued his judgment on August 10, striking down Section 53 of the Criminal Code which has outlawed sodomy for decades, the National Evangelical Association of Belize (NEAB) filed court papers as an interested party late this evening, appealing the ruling. President of the NEAB, Pastor Lance Lewis, told reporters, "We are here to sign the document that says we are appealing the decision by the Chief Justice to remove the sodomy law in Belize." The NEAB was not the only entity to have filed papers for an appeal of the ruling today, however. The Roman Catholic Church and the Government of Belize also filed appeal papers, challenging certain aspects of Chief Justice Benjamin's decision. When the decision to strike down Section 53 was initially announced, Prime Minister Dean Barrow had said that the government would not have appealed the decision, which was hailed regionally as a major victory for the LGBT community (Lesbians, Gays, Bisexuals and Transgender).

Bandits leads PLB standings after 4-1 win over Wagiya
Only two Week 6 games were played mid-week on Tuesday night, as the two scheduled for Independence Day, Wednesday, were postponed "due to security concerns." Down south at the Michael Ashcroft Stadium in Independence, home standing Placencia Assassins had to come from behind to salvage a 1-1 draw against the visiting Verdes FC from Cayo. Darrel Myvette gave Verdes the early lead at the 6th minute, but Ashton Torres equalized at the 90th minute, and that's how it ended. In the other game at the Isidoro Beaton Stadium in Belmopan, the hosts, Belmopan Bandits made a big score against their young visitors, Wagiya FC from Dangriga. Shaking the net for the Bandits were Ian "Yellow" Gaynair (42' & 91') and Brazilian Aloisio Teixeira (48' & 66'), before Wagiya's Evan Mariano replied (92') to avoid the shutout.

Western Eagles lost a loved one
Hello to one and all! There is not much happening in cricket at this time, except for a 20/20 being played among four teams from four villages in a fund raising effort. This Saturday, the games will be in Lords Bank. Teams taking part are Western Eagles, Wicked Eleven, Summer Fever and Sunrise. My main point for this article is to pay respect to the Pook family of Rancho Dolores on the passing of their mother, grandmother, cousin and friend, Mrs. Odelia Pook. This humble lady was one of Western Eagles' most silent fans. During games in Rancho, one would always see her sitting on her veranda enjoying her team do battle. She was a lady of few words, but she will hold a conversation with anyone who took the time out to do so. She was the mother of very good cricket players in the persons of Godfrey, Enfield and Wendell. A few of her grandchildren also play the sport and perform it exceptionally. This humble lady, without a doubt, was my dear friend. I have known her from my very young age. Since leaving Rancho and living in the city, I haven't seen much of her often; but whenever I visited the village, I made a special effort to see and chat with her.

Editorial: Impressionist or illusionist?
It was, after all, a week in which the Financial Secretary, Joe Waight, had recited, in the wake of the legal teleconference arguments in front of the Caribbean Court of Justice by the attorneys for the Government of Belize, on the one hand, and the Ashcroft group, on the other, the litany of financial woes which Belize faced. The total BTL arbitration award in favor of the "Belize-loving" Lord Michael Ashcroft had been upwards of $550 million, in the first instance, and Ashcroft was demanding it all in US dollars, which would have the effect of breaking the Belize dollar. There was the eternal Superbond, hundreds and hundreds of millions of dollars owed at commercial rates, Belize's deficit wreckage from the excesses of neoliberal growth economics. And Mr. Waight was telling us about three additional pro-Ashcroft rulings against the Government of Belize in the United States Court of Appeal, which would add up to $150 million more in debt if Belize had to pay. But, Belize was appealing to the Supreme Court of the United States. A skeptic may have asked, in relation to the U.S. Supreme Court appeals, so what?

Dear Editor, It occurs to me that Donald Trump, the amoral lunatic liar and corrupt Republican nominee for President of the U.S. in this November's election, might consider relocating to Belize, where he could take his ease and feel at home among his con man peers who populate the various ministries and where double-talk and denial is the type of discourse he's most familiar with. In Belize, he could relax on the beach, knowing that no matter how preposterous and illogical his orations might be, a receptive audience can always be found among the "honorable" - that permanent ruling class of bureaucrats and politicians who believe the rules don't apply to them. Should he become bored, wellno problem in taking a short hop to Miami to do a little shopping with the Missusyou know, one of those official "fact finding" missions. I'm sure he would find, in fact, that all is well in Florida.

Mario Lara writes Foreign Affairs Minister Elrington
Dear Honorable Minister of Foreign Affairs and/or CEO, On Saturday, September 17, 2016, I was on a support boat that travelled to Sarstoon Island as part of the first ever Sarstoon Island Eco Challenge where several kayakers and canoers participated in a race from Barranco village to the Sarstoon Island, around it, and back. I personnally observed Guatemalan military personnel and vessels in Belizean waters in front of our forward operating base. A Guatemalan military vessel followed one of the kayaks participating in the race completely around the Sarstoon Island. A drone operated by Guatemalan military also entered Belizean airspace. There is video proof of this available and I believe that our Belizean Coast Guard can confirm for you that this indeed occurred.

The basketball saga of Old Parr
(Chronicles of OLD PARR basketball team of the early seventies: The makings of a multi-championships basketball team both at the Junior and Senior level from 1970 - 1974.) "Cama took a junior championship team by the name of Old Parr, brought them into the senior league, and won a sensational championship. The Old Parr stars included Eric Gladden, Evondale Coburn, Mark Neal and Harry Cadle. This would have been maybe 1971 or 1972. I think Old Parr repeated, and then they became Grand Marnier, whereupon they lost to a new production called Incatecu. Coburn had gone to the States, and perhaps also Rico Gladden." The first paragraph is verbatim from the book Sports, Sin and Subversion, page 57 second paragraph Chapter VIII (titled "Wilton, Clinton and Straddle") written by Evan X Hyde. Without any disrespect or slight whatsoever to the brilliance of the writer, many people on the outside believe that Cama was the brain behind the Old Parr team; however, that is only partially correct. But let's start at the beginning.

Jimmy Morales slams Belize in bid for seat on UN Human Rights Council
Guatemala's president, Jimmy Morales, slammed neighboring Belize at the 71st Session of the UN General Assembly being held in New York City, from September 20-26, 2016, accusing Belize of killing 10 of their citizens near the border since 1999, with the most recent case being the minor who was fatally shot in April 2016. Morales told the UNGA that the "grave acts," which he alleges have been committed by Belize, "hamper bilateral relationship and hinder progress towards building trust" Morales made these disparaging comments against Belize after he made a bid at the UNGA for the international community to support Guatemalan's candidature to the UN Human Rights Council for the period 2017 to 2019. He said that Guatemala and Belize have enjoyed "a privileged relationship," but goes on to add that in recent months, Belize has not shown a reciprocal attitude.

Happy Birthday Belize
Thirty five years ago Belize stepped gingerly into independence. We weren't quite ready because the Guatemalan claim was still hanging over us, and the state of the economy was still wobbly. But we took a leap of faith, just as we did in 1798 when a flotilla of Spanish vessels […]

"Party People" in San Pedro, Ambergris Caye, Belize.
Hi Ziggy here. Remember me? You may not be aware but I'm Belizean. Belizean through and through. Born in Ladyville just over four years ago (around twenty-nine years ago in doggy years) and moved to San Pedro (it's when I decided to go 'upmarket) just over two years ago. Now anyone that knows me knows that I love a party. I mean you don't 'serve' in the British Army without knowing how to party. And we Belizeans are party people! So I was well hyped knowing that it was my country's thirty-fifth birthday on Wednesday. I was excited when I got up and became even more excited when Mommy (that's Rose for the rest of you) started talking about the big parade later that day. She could see how happy I looked but I could see the look of dejection on her face.

Independence Day II: Chalk! Chalk! Chalk!
Last year, the San Pedro Town Council raised the bar on Independence Day with the introduction of the Flying Pinata - a candy drop from a hovering helicopter - and the chalk fling thing. The chalk fling thing is a variation on the paint thing that marks the Carnival time leading up to Lent. Kids run around Central Park and specific blocks of downtown smearing each other with water soluble paints (hopefully washable). Adults even get a chance to join in because - well, it's fun. Why leave all the fun stuff up to the kids??? You can see remnants of the paint days all over town in the form of handprints and paint smears on walls. With chalk, you get the bright colors and frenzied rush that comes with dusting up everyone around you in electric pink and green and yellow clouds. Staffers toss the packets of chalk into the crowd and you basically become the color of the person next to you who opens the packet and flings it into the air.

Happy Birthday, Belize! Only 35 and still celebrating like a youngster!
To me this picture says everything you need to know about Belize on Independence Day. The country is young, vibrant, ambitious - you'd have to be to wear a rig this bountiful on a day this hot! It is no accident that this costume reflects the natural blues and greens of the foliage and Caribbean Sea in the background. San Pedro's Jump Up parade completely lacks the gravitas of nations with long histories of war and loss. The country's one significant battle for independence is celebrated on Sept. 10, The Battle for St. George's Caye, and even that seems to be receding into the realm of legend. The 21st is given over to celebrating the people of Belize with sensuous dance, loud music, outrageously stunning costumes and a joviality that just shouts "Damn! It is good to be in Belize!"

Hands down best show in 10 years
This year marks 35 years of Belize Independence. It all started with the annual pre party on the 20th, Independence eve at the old football field. They had a stage set up and music, since I am right next door I could hear the celebrations from my home. At midnight came the familiar sounds of fireworks so I grabbed my camera and shot the following video and a few pictures right outside my front door. I ended up with 12 min of footage which I managed to edit down to 55 seconds. The grand display must have gone on for at least 20 min to 1/2 hour and I can honestly say hands down it was the best fireworks display I have seen in my 10 years of living here. The Sky was lit up electric and often looked like a glitter bomb had just exploded over downtown San Pedro.

Fifteen CARICOM nationals start specialized fisheries training at top Australian university
Fifteen Caribbean Community (CARICOM) fisheries personnel, including senior fisheries officers, fisheries officers, analysts and policy officers, traveled to Australia this week to participate in a specialized training course on "Enhancing Fisheries Management Capacity in the Caribbean Region." The Caribbean Regional Fisheries Mechanism (CRFM) and the Australian National Centre for Ocean Resources and Security (ANCORS) partnered in developing the four-week course, to strengthen the region's capacity in fisheries law and fisheries management. More specifically, the training -- which is being held at the Innovation Centre at ANCORS, University of Wollongong, ranked among Australia's top ten universities -- is intended to address the conservation and protection of living marine resources and biodiversity; monitoring and surveillance; as well as measures to curb illegal, unregulated and unreported (IUU) fishing.

High Level Meeting on LGBTQ Rights at United Nations
Earlier this week, HRC Global and HRC Board Member Paul Boskind attended the highest-level meeting on LGBTQ rights ever to be held at the United Nations (U.N.). U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and U.S. Vice President Joe Biden addressed world leaders at the U.N.'s LGBT Core Group event entitled, "#Path2Equality: Global leaders discuss progress towards LGBT equality," at U.N. Headquarters in New York City. Perhaps the most moving address of the event came from Caleb Orozco of Belize, the plaintiff in the Supreme Court case that ultimately led to decriminalization of same-sex activity in Belize, setting a historic precedent in the Caribbean region. Orozco shared his personal journey as the face of the movement in Belize and the leader of the nation's only LGBT organization, UNIBAM. Orozco has lived in isolation for years, facing deadly violence and backlash for his outspoken activism. He described how the public has adopted his last name as the latest slur used against LGBTQ people. Both Biden and Ban commended Orozco for his bravery and commitment and thanked him for all that he has done to advance equality in Belize.

Caribbean Tourism Surmounting Challenges
What hasn't Caribbean tourism faced in terms of challenges this year? Even as 2016 dawned, the exceedingly contentious U.S. presidential election promised to impact discretionary spending among U.S. consumers, the Caribbean's number one source market. Since then, Caribbean hoteliers, destinations and attractions have faced all manner of adversity. The Zika virus' emergence earlier this spring stoked travelers' fears of infection, leveling a significant blow to regional hotels, resorts and destinations. Several hoteliers reported a steep drop in summer occupancy this year, and travel research firm STR linked early-season performance decreases at Caribbean hotels to Zika virus concerns. While relatively mild, this year's hurricane season nevertheless wreaked a considerable toll on Belize as Hurricane Earl caused widespread damage across the archipelago in August. Bermuda is currently eyeing an oncoming tropical storm, while Dominica has struggled to overcome the impact of tropical storm Erika, which late last year caused flooding, loss of life and more than $200 million in damage to homes, businesses and tourist facilities.

Nonstop Flight: How The Frigatebird Can Soar For Weeks Without Stopping
Frigatebirds, seagoing fliers with a 6-foot wingspan, can stay aloft for weeks at a time, a new study has found. The results paint an astonishing picture of the bird's life, much of which is spent soaring inside the clouds. Frigatebirds are unique among aquatic birds. Their feathers are not waterproof, so they can't rest on the waves. Males sport a vivid red pouch along their throats that they inflate when trying to attract females. They're known for stealing food from other seabirds. Since the frigatebird spends most of its life at sea, its habits outside of when it breeds on land aren't well-known - until researchers started tracking them around the Indian Ocean. What the researchers discovered is that the birds' flying ability almost defies belief. Ornithologist Henri Weimerskirch put satellite tags on a couple of dozen frigatebirds, as well as instruments that measured body functions such as heart rate. When the data started to come in, he could hardly believe how high the birds flew. "First, we found, 'Whoa, 1,500 meters. Wow. Excellent, fantastique,' " says Weimerskirch, who is with the National Center for Scientific Research in Paris. "And after 2,000, after 3,000, after 4,000 meters - OK, at this altitude they are in freezing conditions, especially surprising for a tropical bird."

As that reality hits home to all of us, so too does the need to raise awareness, increase resilience and mitigate against the effects of climate change. At the 2016 "The Energy of Nature VS. the Nature of Energy" conference organized by Oceana Belize and WWF Belize, Deputy Director of the Caribbean Community's Climate Change Centre, Mr. Carlos Fuller, highlighted the fact that Belize is already experiencing effects of both climate change and global warming; the extreme events such as Hurricane Earl and the catastrophic flooding of October 2015 are clear examples. There are a great many things Belize can still do to protect the vulnerable and safeguard resources, as well as increase development and enhance economic growth. But when it comes to activities like offshore oil exploration in Belize, as Fuller explained, we have little to gain and far too much to lose. Here are highlights of his presentation.
