Sailing Club fundraises for a good cause!

The San Pedro Sailing Club (SPSC) hosted a mega-win fundraising event at Amber Beach Bar & Grill, Caribbean Villas on Sunday, March 13tgh. Amanda Syme, coordinator and organizer for the fundraiser says that the event exceeded expectations, as many volunteers and generous donors supported the sailing club.

The day was more than appropriate to have this community event, especially with warm temperatures, cool breeze and awesome tunes from DJ Debbie. The SPSC organized various fun ways to raise much needed funds. Raffle tickets were sold, as were $10 sailing trips to the reef. Parents of the youth sailors supplied items for their bake sale, there were $1 novelty disposable razors and even a coin drive. Tickets were raffled at $1 a piece which attracted many individuals to buy bulks of tickets for a chance win any of the jaw dropping prizes up for raffle!

There were six drawings total, with one dedicated to the sailors. Package one included a $100 gift certificate to Black Orchid Restaurant and Lounge, a $50 gift certificate to Blue Water Grill and a $50 gift certificate to be redeemed at Estel's Dine By the Sea. Package two consisted of a one-month gym membership to Train Station, a one-hour massage by Ocean Essence Spa and a $60 gift voucher from Belizean Arts Gallery. Package three was comprised of one large ceviche dish at Hurricane's Ceviche Bar, wine Tervis glasses from Palapa Bar & Grill, along with a $50 gift certificate, and a $50 gift certificate to Lola's Pub & Grill. Package four included a $50 gift certificate to Superbuy/Caye Supplies, an Easter basket and designer handbag from the Candle Garden, a $50 gift certificate from Melt Café and a $50 gift certificate from Carlos & Ernie's Runway Bar & Grill. Package five was a large pizza donated by Pirate's Pizza, a gift basket from Belize Chocolate Boutique and a Belizean Melody Paint Party. The last package was the Junior Sailor Gift Special Package which included two beach towels from Guest Supply Store, a $100 savings account from Belize Bank, one large pizza from Pedro's Pizza, a $25 gift certificate to DandE's Frozen Custard and three DVD's from Tech Transylvania.

It was a lucky day for Noele Ross-McLain Sutherland of Go Yoga who walked away with three of the raffle prize packages. Other winners of the raffle were Maya Nacario, Lucy Arabadzheiva and Casa Picasso.

A total of $1,695 BZD was raised through ticket sales, food and donations. There also was a silent auction that generated a whopping $3,725 in bids. Donors for the auction included Caribbean Villas Hotel, Belize Sailing Vacations, Ramon's Village, Victoria House Hotel, Seaduced by Belize, Blue Tang Resort, Ambergris Divers, Searious Adventurers, Mr. Bill, Fido's Courtyard, El Fogon Restaurant, Rain Restaurant at Grand Caribe and Rico's Restaurant at Banyan Bay. The SPSC passed their goal of $5,000 by raising a total of $5,420.

"A special thank you to Dr. Tina, Dr. Renae, Ms. Marion, Dave, Amanda, Shelley and Tony who spent a busy three days gathering gifts and selling tickets. And last but not least - the reason why we are all united - thanks to our sailors who keep us entertained, challenged, motivated and proud," said Syme.

The SPSC sails every weekend (weather permitting) and organizers invite the community to lend their support to the young sailors of La Isla Bonita.
