Hello! This is my first time posting here. My husband and I thinking of moving from the U.S. to Belize. Although we've done much research on the internet about the different areas, culture, retirement, etc., we are visiting Belize (San Pedro) for the first time this coming December to check things out in person.
My question is this:
I am on necessary medication for a degenerative joint disease (similar to rheumatoid arthritis). I know that in the U.S., without insurance, this medicine would cost us $2,500 a month = $30,000 per year. How does one go about getting medical insurance in Belize? How expensive is it? If we can get insurance, but this medication is not covered, does Belize have any kind of monetary assistance programs?

Thanks for any help and/or advice you can give!! smile

Belize has enough difficulty trying to provide medical services to its citizens. As an American, asking for Belizean assistance would not be proper, even if it were offered.

The Ambergris Chamber of Commerce acquired the following information for it's members:

The insurance is underwritten by British Fidelity, located in Nassau. They are worldwide coverage with "pre-approved" doctors/hospitals throughout the Caribbean (meaning they bill the insurance company directly). Others, you must pay the bill and submit the claim. BF offers 100% medivac flight insurance as a very affordable option (i.e. US$50 per year).

We don't have a "group" policy per se, but BF has put together several medical packages that are just marginally higher than a group rate. For additional information, forms and questions please contact our service rep:

Thanks for the information! As I said, I've only done research on culture, geography, etc. I appreciate your response & am looking forward to our visit!

I have British Fidelity. However, I have had two back surgeries and had to sign an exclusion form for a pre-existing back problem and my insurance does not cover any medication. Give Sara a call or e-mail her to make sure that medication is included. I do take some medication, but found that using British Fidelity was still cheaper than the competitors covering cost for medication, buying my meds for full price, but then again I only take some rather cheap meds for my back.

If you find an insurance company that'll take you and cover a $30,000/year pre-existing condition let us all know.

I sense some sarcasm regarding my question. My sincere apologies if I have offended anyone. As I've said twice, in a round-about way, I know NOTHING about this topic, which is why I am here.
Thanks to those who provided information. I do appreciate it! smile

I can not get health insurance in the US! Maybe I will just have to move to Belize to get covered.

KE are you going to be in SP next winter? We will be there Jan to end of March or so. It is always fun to meet other boarders.

Sychokittie,
My hubby and I are moving to SP soon. He is on disability retirement and had a concern about meds as well. We were shocked to discover that our stateside medical insurance will reimburse us for costs incurred while we are out of the country. I don't know what your situation is, but check out your current insurance. You may get a pleasant surprise, as we did.
Good luck to you!
