What birds are in Belize?

More than 250 species of birds have been seen on Ambergris Caye. Non-birding visitors may especially note the Frigate Birds and Brown Pelicans, common around piers. Seagulls, oddly, are not very common. Elbert Greer, who writes a weekly column for the San Pedro Sun, and Susan Lala, are the island’s resident birding experts.

The Lala Bird Sanctuary is located about a 1/2 mile south of town. It’s near either Coral Bay Village or Caribbean Villas. Local guides will also take you on a tour if you ask.

A wonderful trip for birders is to go up the New River to Lamanai. This trip will allow you to see an amazing variety of wildlife.

You could also visit along the lagoon side of the island, suck as near the airstrip. Species such as Rosetta Spoonbills, great Blue Hurons, Snowy Egrets, Pelicans, Osprey, and many others occupy the area. It is a nice place to watch birds. There are also a couple of well behaved Crocks.
