Given our proximity to North and South America, as well as the Caribbean, getting to Belize is easy. Less than two hours by air from any major US southern gateway (Charlotte, Dallas, Houston, and Miami), Belize currently hosts five major airlines, that serve Belize from the United States and neighboring Central American countries. These carriers are: American, Continental, Delta, Grupo TACA, and US Air. These major airlines have daily direct flights from US and Central American gateways, all coordinated with European connections. There is no direct flight from Mexico, but there are flights to Cancun with a 6 hour bus trip to the Belize Northern Border, down to the town of Corozal, then you can catch a commuter plane (Tropic Air) to the island. The Philip Goldson International Airport (BZ) is the main port of entry into Belize. From Belize City, you have one of two choices to get from the Belize mainland to the island of Ambergris Caye. Most visitors reach the island by either taking a boat or an airplane across lower Chetumal Bay from Belize City. Locals refer to passenger boats as “skiffs” and their smaller canoe-like vessels are “dories”. The crossing takes about 1-1/4 hours by skiff (or) about 15 minutes by a 15-passenger commuter aircraft. A dialect of English known as Belizean Creole is widely spoken through the country. Other languages spoken include Carib, and Mayan. Currency The Belize dollar is tied to the U.S. dollar and exchanged with most merchants at a fixed $2.00 (BZD) = $1.00 (USD). When exchanging money in the bank, Central Banking exchange rates apply. U.S. dollars are accepted almost everywhere. There is no need to exchange currency before arriving. Most places accept U.S. dollars and major credit cards. Electricity The electricity and electrical outlets in Belize are the same as the United States using 110 volts/60 cycles. Although in some of the more remote locations, diesel generators supply the sole means of electricity. A small surge suppressor is highly recommended for computers and other sensitive equipment. Visitors from countries such as Australia and Europe should bring power adapters. Drinking Water Unlike Mexico, the tap water is potable and readily available in most areas of Belize. The water used at the resort is taken from an underground cistern, and perfectly safe to use for showering, bathing and cleaning. We do recommend though drinking it. Bottled purified water is available in 5 gallon, 1 gallon and 32 oz. drinking containers through Crystal Water Distributors. Restaurants on the island, use bottled purified water for drinking and ice as well. Food Most restaurant cuisines carry a Caribbean flare. You can find anything from stewed chicken, rice and beans to tropical salads, steaks, seafood and fruit plates. About Ambergris Caye About San Pedro About Ambergris Caye Ambergris Caye (pronounced Am-BUR-gris or Am-BUR-grease Kay) is the largest of some 200 cayes that dot the coastline of Belize. Ambergris is part of a wide limestone peninsula dangling south from the Yucatan coast of the Mexican state of Quintana Roo. Ambergris is 25 miles long and a little over a mile wide, in some places, and is located in the clear shallow waters, of the Caribbean Sea, just off the tip of the Mexican Yucatan Peninsula. The history of the island goes back to the days of the Maya, European Pirates and Mexican Refugees who fled during the Caste Wars. The descendants from Mexico make up most of the island’s population today. The economy of the island was once dependent on the coconut industry, followed by the fishing industry, but is now dependent on tourism. Most Ambergris residents are of Mexican ancestry and speak Spanish among themselves. Early in Belize’s history, Mexico tried to lay claim to the island. Ambergris Caye is very similar in size, to the Caribbean island of Barbados. Her coastline is protected by the 190 miles of long Barrier Reef, the second largest living coral reef in the world (with the first being off the coast of Australia). In Mayan times, Ambergris Caye was a trading post. The Marco Gonzales ruins at the southern tip of Ambergris Caye and the Basil Jones site to the north, as well as the many recently excavated “home sites” in the heart of San Pedro Town give evidence to a former Mayan population of 10,000. The narrow channel that separate Mexico and Belize was dug by the Maya to provide a trade route from the bay of Chetumal to the Caribbean. The island’s name is a holdover from colonial days and refers to a waxy substance found in sperm whale intestines, that was once used in making perfumes. Some say that ambergris washed up here regularly during the colony’s early history, but marine biologists are skeptical. They maintain that whales have never been common in this part of the Caribbean and argue that sightings off Ambergris’ coastline have always been very rare. Following the Maya came the whalers and buccaneers and the ancestors of present day residents who were fisherman and workers in the coconut plantations. Today tourism has replaced fishing as the major source of income for the islanders, although the mahogany skiffs are still in service for charter fishing and diving. Fishing was once the Caye’s principal industry, but within the last 20 years tourism has taken over. Many fisherman now use their boats exclusively to cater to tourists, as the snorkeling, sports fishing, diving, and manatee watching. San Pedro, the island’s only town, offers a wide choice of hotels, restaurants, bars, gift shops, outfitters and travel agencies to suit every recreational interest and pocketbook, although food and services are relatively expensive here. The island’s biggest tourist attraction is the Belize Barrier Reef that runs parallel along the entire coast of Belize. The reef is only a quarter mile from the beach of Ambergris Caye, providing an array of unbelievable awe inspiring dive sites. The island’s seaside is jammed with jetties and dive shops, all offering their services to the different dive sites and to the Great Blue Hole. One of the most popular dive sites is the Hol Chan Marine Reserve, which is only a ten-minute boat ride from San Pedro Town. The reef’s beauty and richness has put Belize among the top ten dive destinations in the world. Ambergris Caye has many small settlements on the north and south sides of the main town of San Pedro. People who acquire land here on Ambergris Caye, making this home, tend to give names to their pieces of paradise. These names over time, are often adopted by all. Each area of the island, has its own unique features, that visitors and locals have come to love and enjoy. San Pedro Town – the only town on the island of Ambergris Caye is about one and half miles long and in some places about a mile wide. Its atmosphere is that of a small bustling fishing village, and is home to the majority of the island’s population as well as a majority of the restaurants, bars, clubs and hotels on the island. Visitors will most likely find what they need within walking distance. The town is clustered with wooden houses, some with Mexican decor, other Caribbean, and some still remain with the English colonial architecture. Gift shops, boutiques, bars, cafes, and restaurants adorn Front and Middle streets (now named Barrier Reef Drive and Pescador Drive). A short walk in town and you’ll feel the friendliness of the people and witness the ease of their lifestyles as they go through daily life. Bare feet, tee-shirts and shorts is the typical island dress code. The people of the island are called “Sanpedranos” and speak English, Spanish, Creole, and Maya all at the same time, making it their own island dialect. They are proudn of their heritage and are willing to share it with tourists. Before tourism picked up in the eighties, the islanders were mostly Mestizos (Mayan-Spanish). Today they share their island with the Creole, Maya, Central American refugees, and Americans that have made San Pedro their new home. The vast majority of San Pedro’s residents are good humored and tolerant, their lifestyle casual and simple. The tin-roofed, colorfully, painted wooden houses are cheerfully dilapidated, giving the distinct impression that you can relax all day long, if that is your choice. In the evening, the island transforms into more of a social atmosphere. You will find tourists and islanders at different bars and restaurants listening to reggae and Latino music and sharing the day’s adventures, with whomever will listen. For those who like to take the day off from diving , day tours can be arranged to the Maya archeological sites and Belize’s lush jungle rain forests. For those who just want to relax, a day on the sandy beach, with a good book and a rum punch may be all that is needed. While San Pedro is suffering under the strain of rapid growth, Ambergris Caye still has much to offer. People are friendly, accommodations are comfortable, and there’s plenty to do. Resorts on the outskirts of San Pedro are noticeably more expensive, but tend to be more tranquil and luxurious than hotels in town. Hikers and bicyclists will find that much of the island is covered with high broad leaf forest interspersed with freshwater sinks that attract lots of wildlife, including an abundance of birds. Ambergris Caye island has the largest single concentration of tourist services, with San Pedro still being able to retain a laid-back atmosphere. Most of the island has sandy streets, that belong to slow moving golf carts and baby strollers. The water off the island is iridescent blue and is immediately accessible to the residents and guests. A cooling trade wind sweeps in front the northeast much of the time, keeping insects, pests at bay. The island offers an abundance of things to eat and drink, and some of the country’s best cooks are happy to prepare their rendition of their favorite fresh seafood dish for your to enjoy. The country’s court system, therefore, provides a firm basis to ensure legitimate business practices are maintained. It has a stable economy with the Belizean dollar being attached to the US currency at $2.00 BZD = $1.00 USD. There are international investments in the country of Belize in the areas of utilities, farming, tourism, industry and communications. The country although being considered third world, has all the advantages of North American access through convenient international banking and internet connections. In addition, to being the number one tourist destination in Belize, it is also the most developed area. Ambergris Caye has become a sough after investment opportunity for large and small international investors. The year round population which continues to grow is a melting pot of international investors and North Americans that blend into the mixture of native Belizean cultures that inhabit the Cayes. While cultural differences are present in personal preferences and styles, you will find modern grocery stores, health clinics, telephone and internet access and banking services to be quite similar to those you enjoy in North America. Property values on Ambergris Caye are increasing steadily for the past ten years at a rate of approximately 15-20%, in some locations 30-50%. Development, amenities and availability of properties in an area are the main determining factors of price increases. Recent publicity through television specials, such as “Temptation Island”, and adventure travel specials has brought Belize into the homes of many North Americans. Yet, it remains a close, yet exotic destination to be explored and enjoyed. Non-Belizeans may own property or business in Belize 100% with fee simple title. Expenses incurred in purchasing property include a Government Stamp Duty and legal fees of one (1) to two (2) percent of the purchase price. Stamp Duty is based on the purchase price and is currently undergoing a reduction. Please talk to your sales representative for a detailed explanation. Under normal circumstances your real estate transaction will take from 30 to 60 days. The Lands Department located in Belmopan, the capital city of Belize, is the only entity who can approve, record and issue titles for property. Holchan Reef Resort Home About Belize Tours & Adventures » Hol Chan Marine Reserve » Rates & Policies Photo Gallery Sales » Contact Us WHY INVEST IN BELIZE? Why Buy a Slice of Paradise TEN (10) REASONS TO INVEST IN BELIZE 1. LOCATION Belize is highly accessible from the U.S. and Canada, and now from Western Europe as well. Its proximity to Canada and the U.S. creates short travel time and there is no jet lag due to time differences. (Belize is on Central Time). 2. STABILITY Belize has a stable, democratic government, and the economy in Belize is stable and balanced. As a Commonwealth country (just like Canada), property rights are protected in Belize through the traditions of English Common Law. In Belize, private property is respected and protected. Foreigners can own property in Belize, with exactly the same rights and protections that exist for Belizeans. There are absolutely no restrictions on foreign land ownership. 3. LANGUAGE Belize is the only English-speaking country in Central America, making business and real estate transactions easy to navigate for most Canadians. Everything from street signs, restaurant menus and newspapers, to official government documents and real estate contracts are in English. This makes Belize hugely attractive to English speakers as a either a second, retirement or vacation home destination. 4. CURRENCY The Belize dollar is fixed two to one with the U.S. dollar, making it a very stable currency. The U.S. dollar is accepted anywhere and everywhere in Belize. Anything of substantial value, such as real estate, is priced in U.S. dollars. This means that prices in Belize are more stable for American dollar holders than they would be in the Belizean currency floated against the dollar. 5. TAX-FRIENDLY Belize is a tax haven. The offshore financial services industry in Belize is highly regarded and well regulated; it is also quite advanced and well supported by the government. In addition, those who own real estate in Belize pay no capital gains or estate (inheritance) taxes. Property taxes are very low, just a fraction of what they are in Canada or the United States. Rental income is taxed at only 1.75 percent of gross receipts. 6. NATURAL BEAUTY & ECO-TOURISM Belize has the second largest and most fascinating barrier reef in the world. The diving and snorkeling are consistently rated among the very best in the world. Over 46 percent of Belize is dedicated to National Parks and Marine Reserve, including the United Nations World Heritage sites such as the 27,000 acre Balcalar Chico National Park and Marine Reserve on Ambergris Caye. 7. EXCELLENT RETIREE PROGRAM The Belize Residency Program (QRP) enables foreigners to retire to Belize under a very favorable set of guidelines, with status as a Qualified Retired Person. This simple process exempts people from the payment of all taxes and levies on all income or receipts which accrue from a source outside of Belize (whether income is from work performed or an investment). This program also provides a duty and tax exemption on new and used personal and household effects, including motor vehicles, boats and aircraft. You must be over 45 years of age to qualify, and be able to substantiate monthly income of at least $2,000.00 USD. 8. FRIENDLY PEOPLE Belize is home to the most genuine and sincerely friendliest people that you will find anywhere in the world. You will hear this time and again from everyone who visits Belize, and for good reason. 9. TROPICAL CLIMATE The climate ranges from sub-tropical to tropical all year long, similar to that of South Florida. As long as you’re comfortable with the warm to hot temperatures, perhaps tempered by cooling breezes from the sea, you’ll like Belize weather. As a bonus, if you are on the Cayes, you’ll enjoy those cooling breezes even more so, and will find that the temperatures are cooler than on the mainland and the humidity less of a factor. 10. AMBERGRIS CAYE Tourism is Belize’s No. #1 industry, and Ambergris Caye is Belize’s No. #1 tourist destination. It is also the No. #1 retirement destination in Belize. Ambergris Caye offers miles and miles of white sandy beaches, unforgettable views of the second largest Barrier Reef in the world and some of the best fly and deep water fishing in the Caribbean. Ambergris Caye is best known for being one of the top 10 diving destinations in the world, featuring tours to numerous Barrier Reef dive sites as well as the world renowned “Blue Hole”. Ambergris Caye continues to sustain the highest appreciation rates on property anywhere in the country (for more than 20 years now), showing that the market is stable and based on ever-increasing demand.
