TigerSharks dubbed ‘Kings of the Court’
Like clockwork, the TigerSharks came, they saw and were ultimately victorious once again as they dominated and were dubbed ‘Kings of the Court’ in the Belmopan Basketball Championship which took center stage at the UB Gymnasium in the Garden City of Belmopan.
Their bitter rivals, the UB Jaguars had their hands full heading into the best of three game series against the TigerSharks and game one tipped off on Thursday night and what an exciting encounter it was. The UB jaguars led by over 10 points in the 1st quarter, but the TigerSharks narrowed the lead in the 2nd quarter. The Sharks first lead came in the third quarter when Kelvin Gillett hit a three pointer. UB came back to tie the score at 56-56 in the 4th quarter but UB coach Kevin Siroki protested too much and an irritated referee Glen Gill, gave UB a technical foul and Keith Acosta scored 3 of 4 free-throws. As regulation time was narrowed down to two minutes and the TigerSharks with a 6 point lead, the team ran the clock down as much they could with passing of the ball. After the sound of the buzzer, TigerSharks won game one 72-63.
In game two, a ‘must win’ for the Jaguars on Saturday night the Belmopan Basketball championships took center stage as UB Jaguars tried to force a game three after losing Thursday night to the mighty San Pedro TigerSharks. UB started strong and kept the lead for the entire game up until the fourth quarter. At the end of the first half, UB Jaguars jumped to a 44-40 to lead. With Keith “Superman” Acosta’s dominance on the boards, the TigerSharks made good the use of his offensive rebounds. Acosta then came up with a big time put back as the TigerSharks inched closer. With a minute twenty-five to go, Ashton Edwards gave San Pedro the first lead with a big time three pointer and then Burgess came up with a crucial steal to go all the way for two points. Give it up for San Pedro TigerSharks who grabbed and stunned the UB Jaguars in a match that ended 83-81; a big W to claim this year’s Belmopan title and we say congratulations team! The bragging rights are rightfully yours; big up team!
