Rice Mill at Punta Gorda, April 1935
Rice has been grown for many years in Toledo District , at first it was on a very small scale by the Maya Indians. In 1932 an experimental rice station was set up and one year later the first rice mill was constructed in Toledo.
Less than 5 years later under the management of rice specialist Mr. Daniel Darius Haynes Toledo rice mill was producing nearly 500,000 pounds of rice a year. Text and two photos below courtesy of Bel Itza (Andrew Enriquez) .
