La Finca - December 1992
La Finca was also called Los Renegados. I think it was this place that gave me the mad mad dream to move to the island.
Initially it was operated by Jim and Anna Wade. I tried to buy it, but Jim had already sold it (several times it seems) to others. Despite not being able to purchase this amazing place the move happened and I've never regretted it.
We spent our first Belizean Christmas there in the company of Jim, Tulu, Elbert and some guy from the BDF. Most likely Stewart Corns showed up before the day was over.
Upstairs was the owners apartment. Downstairs was the bamboo-paneled bar and a kitchen (never had a meal there though).
Jim had a huge collection of baby-doll legs (from the old baby-doll spill) stacked on one wall of the bar.
At water's edge were two funky casitas. Cold running water, big old generator when it was time for some electricity.
It was leased with the intent to buy, by four women who re-opened it as Mata Rocks. Title problems made the sale fall apart, so the ladies moved to town and opened the "new" Mata Rocks where it is today (formerly the House of the Rising Sun). Hence why the hotel in town is named after a reef location that is 7 miles away!
Today there is a large new home on the property - it is the first house south of Rojo Lounge.
