It was a first for many in San Pedro to
experience Broadway! It was probably the first barefoot performance for
star Sean McDermott. Approximately 250 people were on hand Sunday evening
to enjoy the beautiful tenor voice that belted out the tunes of so many
hit shows. Accompanied by Barefoot Skinny (Tim Budd) and Dale Wallace,
Mr. McDermott started the show with "The Best Is Yet To Come". He
certainly fulfilled that promise by entertaining the crowd for two more
hours at this charity benefit for the Lions Inter-Community Hospital
construction fund.
Lion "Beto" Marin, Chairman for the new hospital fund,
was on hand to collect the many pledges coming in. As Sean finished
"Unchained Melody" the largest donation of the night, $100,000 was
announced, earning Senator Barry Bowen a standing ovation from the crowd.
Knowing how much a hospital is needed and having just returned from a
hospital stay in the United States, Mr. Bowen's support seemed quite
appropriate. Other generous pledges included Dr. & Mrs. Wil Lala,
Marshall & Valerie Pickard, Jerry McDermott, Corry McDermott, Royal
Palm/Destiny Resorts, Celi Greif Varela, Heart and Sole Boutique, Pat
Syley, Dredge and Land Ltd., Rick and Rose (from the Beissner House),
Amigos del Mar, Emory & Lisa King (in memory of Lisa's father Danny
Vasquez), an anonymous donation and a special pledge in honor of the late
Dr. Herman Smith. After all was "sung" and done, more than $135,000 was
raised for this much needed charity.
Melanie Paz had her very own special
moment with the star as he not only led everyone in "Happy Birthday," but
serenaded her with "Vaya Con Dios". In honor of his father, Corry, he
performed dad's favorite show tune, "New York, New York".
As the evening progressed, raffle intermissions were
held with many ticket holders winning fabulous prizes. Kind donations for
prizes were given by the following businesses: Capricorn, Captain
Shark's, Caruso, Celi's Deli, El Pescador, Jade Garden, Mata Chica,
Moncho's Rentals, Rendezvous, Romy Kie & Ramon's Restaurant, Royal
Palm, San Pedro Hardware, San Pedro Sun,
Sweet Basil, Tropic Air, Victoria House and many thanks to Ed Callaway of
Island Auto Golf Cart Rentals for Sean's transportation for the week.
Thank you to all the hard workers of the San Pedro Lions Club who gave of
their time so generously, once again, to work at the benefit.
Special thanks and all our gratitude to Sean McDermott
for taking the time, energy and money to fly to our lovely island to
perform for this much needed facility and for the extraordinary
entertainment.
